Sorry if you posted this somewhere else. No luck on a search. What brand adaptor are you using? I have an ENET to OBD cable. Just need ENET to Lightening. I see a lot of options on Amazon. But I've had Apple products not like aftermarket stuff too :).
Get a lightening ethernet adapter like:

or this one I also have to use with my MacBook and iPad:

I cheered too soon it seems… I’m unable to make changes to the headunit as it does not show up under the ‘control units’ list in BimmerCode.
iDrive 8.5, took delivery yesterday, 8m using an OBDLink CX adapter

There was a rumor that as the iDrive moved to 8.5 additional modules could be locked. It's either that or Bimmercode hasn't figured out iDrive 8.5 fully yet.

I emailed BimmerUtility support about this. Here is their response:-

“Hello, yes this is due to BMW changing to a secure coding platform that cars can only be coded that are connected to their cloud servers. We don't have a time frame on when it will be accessible.”

😢

Hmm well that going to suck for all the new i4 owners. This is what happen with the iX/i7 from the get go.

I don't think that's directly related.
The article is speaking in very broad terms without any specifics, I would categorize it a step above clickbait at best (not saying there isn’t any truth there).

There’s no connection between locked ECU’s and the alleged vulnerable APIs the article is alluding to.

BMW will likely join Mercedes and others and prevent any possible “coding” in the future. Unfortunately, we’ll be stuck with the iDrive warning screen when and if that happens.

My source on this is good....they have a lot of personal data both in vehicle and on cloud APIs to protect and when you need increased security you need to go multilayer, not just one place.....

Well, as per my previous suspicion BMW custom coding ( as we used to know it) comes to the end.
The move to online CAFD and secure coding by BMW was clear with iX see the below thread:
It was just a matter of time all other models follow either with software update or iDrive upgrades.
I have coded all my BMW's some heavily and it seams the "risky fun" is finally over....
Life.

Yet some simplest coding can still be done - read the last post of attached thread.

What else to say.

I was able to successfully code the following last night.
1. Bowers and Wilkens Sound (I like the Concert setting)
2. Removed the start up warning (I wish you could also remove the DAPP warning)
3. Removed the seat belt chime
4. Lowered the volume on the lock/unlock chirp
5. Added Purple to Ambient Lights
6. Changed the interior liftgate button to be push down for both open and close
Do you have standard speakers or HK? I have the standard audio and wondering if coding Bowers and Wilkin will do any good. Thanks!

I pulled together the below steps for my i4. I wanted to share it here for anyone who would like to try the first time.
It is very straightforward. I printed these to have next to me in the car for the first time coding. having a printed sheet for anti-dazzle was important so I didn't make an error.

Absolute legend OP. This whole process only took 5 mins and very happy to be using the anti-dazzle. Side note, OBD Link shipped me their adapter in 2 days so whole process was really easy.

I didn’t see it in this thread, I may have missed it, but does anyone know what variables to change in expert mode to allow access to the keyboard while not in park? Thanks!

I'm able to access the keyboard while not in park. I'm not sure why you can't. When the wheel comes up there's an option to tap to get the keyboard up. Am I missing something?

I mean in apps like CarPlay and Google maps as well. There is something we should be able to turn off that tells the car that we aren’t moving or increase the speed that it allows that access. Someone in another thread mentioned they did it, but I can’t remember who or where and searching ended up looking like a search for a needle in a haystack.

Ah ok, nevermind, I don't use those. In BMW nav you have no issues with this.

Found the thread and it's @Techwhiz1 that found it, but still waiting for an answer....

Bimmercode configured this information also. No coding on iDrive 8.5 vehicles.
