Probably won’t apply to the current i4 but maybe we’ll see this in future models (LCI?).
Press release is clear for me: no update for existing i4sIt's still not clear that we are getting iDrive 8.5 OTA for our cars. The actual press release from BMW says that it will be available in cars produced after July. It doesn't mean that we won't get the update, but BMW hasn't announced anything about OTA for MY22 or MY23 i4s.

If it‘s just a software update then it means that cars that were built prior to this will be upgradable? 🙏🏻Well hopefully i4 will include all models. If it's just a software update i can't see how they could exclude any models, then again BMW does what they want...
BMW Blog is terrible, I agree. They are an echo chamber for misconceptions and they barely do any research. It is not the first time or the last time bmwblog puts incorrect information on their website, frankly every time I read something on that blog it has some incorrect information. They do not do their homework.
I want to note that bmwblog is just another outlet, and is not an official BMW source.
Don't wan to be a downer here (just want to set the right expectations), but I have never seen BMW offer something like this post delivery. Heck, they don't even offer manual precondition post November 2022, we know this is 100% software feature. I'd say 0 chances 8.5 would come to anything that didn't have it initially. Prove me wrong BMW!Really hope we get this update on all the i4s. Would be sad if BMW decides that the cars infotainment systems go legacy after less than 2 years, it would not make me very excited about getting another BMW to replace the i4.
I know, that is what I fear although I hope it isn’t so. When I got the car I got it because BMW was touting how they are now putting effort into software and thinking new about it so I did expect them to actually do that. Had I known they were going to do the same old things they’ve always done I am not sure I would have gone for the i4. Silly me for believing a company I guessDon't wan to be a downer here (just want to set the right expectations), but I have never seen BMW offer something like this post delivery. Ooh, the i5 reveal is today! PRESS STREAMINGAlso Plug&Charge only for i5, i7 and iX, not for i4
This relates more to charging networks. In Europe, plug&charge already works with Fastned and Electra (and probably others too) and the i4. Oddly, the only two BMWs that aren't supported are the newer ones (i7 and iX1).I don't expect it.
I wonder what happened to plug and charge.. they said last year they were going to support it this year but I haven't seen any of the new vehicles launch with it either..

Charge your BMW without an app and card
The Plug&Charge function enables customers to charge electricity at public charging points without having to use a charging card or app.www.bmwblog.com
We also need to know if the new MGU / head unit is directly plug and play with current i4 configurations. If it's just a direct drop in, I can see some rationale for upgrading but if it's gated by other hardware dependencies, then it's a different proposition. The current price on an MGU is about $2500 USD, so it's not terrible. If you have an i4 today, you’re not getting 8.5. Your best bet if you really want it is to find a dealer who is willing to install the new hardware on your car.

I personally don't see this a significant upgrade, nothing I would spend this kind of $$$ on.$2500 USD is not terrible?????You have way more money to burn than me!

@northerncalguy Truth be told, I wouldn't pay $2800 for the carbon fiber package either. It's relative.
The exterior CF package was $2800 -- you could argue an MGU upgrade does more, maybehaha.
