This happened yesterday, on one of the busy freeways (I-15), express lane in Southern California. A CHP officer decided to pull me over for speeding, going 76 miles per hour. (of all speeds). He claimed I was going 82, when I passed him, but clearly that wasn't the case. Doesn't matter much in California since even 1 mile over can result in fine.

Anyone that knows SoCal roads, even though the speed limit is 65-70mph on the freeways, up to 80mph is generally the rule of thumb. Keeps things moving for us.

As far as the law goes, totally at fault here, however, he proceeds to tell me: "Just because you have an i4 doesn't mean the rules of physics don't apply". I ended the conversation with him at that point, politely asked if our business is done and I can go.

Careful out there ;)

I've always seen them more as the "suggestions of physics..."

Sorry, my friend. Stinks.

What the hell does the rule of physics have anything to do in that situation? Speeding doesn't mean you're breaking any rules of physics. Does he mean the rules of law?

You stumbled upon quite the character.

I think perhaps because it was raining and at that speed...

Although the i4 is heavier than other vehicles and likely more stable on the wet.

So Ticket or Warning only for your death-defying stunt??

Hey what are the two G-force numbers on there? One is for the curve you are going around, what is the other? Could it be acceleration and you DID get above 80 by the time the cop clocked you?!

I would say there are many fine officers out there but they are all people, and inherently imperfect. Once upon a time in a Driving School (part of my penalty for a ticket in my younger days - way before EVs) the officer teaching the class was trying to impress upon (or Scare, in my opinion) the class how "speed kills" and blah blah... He stated "Modern cars' engines have gotten so powerful that they overwhelm the brakes". Being familiar with the 0-60, 60-0 AND the 0-100-0 times of many high performance and regular old cars, and that the braking times were ALWAYS quicker, I raised my hand and politely disagreed, and started to describe the physics of it as indicated by these measures of performance.
I was basically told I was flat wrong, and to keep quiet.

I recently saw a video that stated the Model S Plaid is the only car that can accelerate faster than it can brake (0-60 anyway). However that is due to inadequate brakes.

Pretty sure he got the ticket. Chippees don't pull over for just a warning these days. They apparently give physics lectures and other useful academic info, including where to show up for court.

Ticket of course (the physics lesson wasn't free :) ), no big deal though. I took issue with his comment. I'm not sure what the G-force numbers are, I had DAPP engaged so there was no acceleration when I passed him.

That's a drag! As someone who shares the same roads as you, I can certainly attest that median speeds on our LA freeways are around 80mph when we are lucky enough to not be stuck in traffic whereas I certainly feel safer passing cars rather than being stuck in a pack. I am constantly scanning upcoming onramps and traffic for a CHP but my luck will run out someday as yours did.

As I recall, you don't have a front plate. If that's still the case, did you get an hassle over that?

CHP definitely cherrypicks who they ticket. Many years ago I got ticketed in a rental car. It's quite clear that their objective isn't really enforcing the speed limit because ticketing one loser while letting everyone else speed isn't the way to achieve it.
