So Ticket or Warning only for your death-defying stunt??
Pretty sure he got the ticket. Chippees don't pull over for just a warning these days. They apparently give physics lectures and other useful academic info, including where to show up for court.

Don't get me started on the hundreds of non-EV cars with single occupants diving in and out of the HOV lanes double-yellow lines be damned. Never ever see anyone get nailed for that!
But with the genius toll express lanes rolling out in various places in California, there's even less ability for folks to discern who's OK to use the lane and who isn't. It's a mess, but as long as you've got the right paperwork, stickers, toll passes, lucky charms, talismans, good looks, you should be ok driving here.

I have not gotten a ticket in a while. Last time I got pulled over, I appologized right away, said I was stupid, and got just a warning. I dont know if it always works that way, but I feel like if you start with "I was not doing xyz" your more likely to get a ticket vs warning.
Yeah, round here if you get pulled over its pretty much a guaranteed citation especially if they're on a motorcycle. Maybe anecdotal exceptions here and there, but seldom. Best thing to do is saying nothing, take the citation and based on your situation, go to court, fight or pay. As others have mentioned, its become a driving tax somewhat these days and you can accept or have your day in wonderful traffic court where they often reduce the citation by half.

My experience with the police was completely the opposite.
There was bound to be a story like this!

I had one good encounter in my brand new E90. Was pulled over going like 80 maybe on the freeway by the local PD (not a Chippee). Guy came out with bike shorts (he was a bike patrol officer) and said why are you going so fast? I told him I just came back from Germany and they drive this way over there, sorry! He said slow down and gave me a pass. (1) I think he didn't want to deal with the interagency paperwork and (2) he seemed like a nice guy and (3) I had a bunch of colleagues in my car and we were heading to lunch, so maybe he read the "room" - needless to say, this (edit: the free pass) never happened again ;).

I'm not reading 5 pages of this, so if someone already said this then apologies.... If he wrote you up for 82 and you have proof that you were not doing 82, good chance a judge will throw that ticket out. Doesn't matter if you were speeding. Misinformation on the citation.

Good strategy! What if he had proof he was going faster than the speed limit, is it still misinformation? As in, does his infraction get negated by misinformation, bad record keeping on the officer's part?

The State could also bring into question the accuracy of the speedo being used to argue the inaccuracy claim. However, based on established practices, the Court tends to err on the side of the State in terms of a factual claim challenge. But, if you could raise doubt within some reasonable margin, say the Officer's reading is off by as much as X%, perhaps you can pass the sniff test and argue that angle.
