Don't get me started on the hundreds of non-EV cars with single occupants diving in and out of the HOV lanes double-yellow lines be damned. Never ever see anyone get nailed for that!

But with the genius toll express lanes rolling out in various places in California, there's even less ability for folks to discern who's OK to use the lane and who isn't. It's a mess, but as long as you've got the right paperwork, stickers, toll passes, lucky charms, talismans, good looks, you should be ok driving here.

The first time I was pulled over, when I was 16 (way too many years ago), the cop told me "everyone should get a ticket their first time". I don't live in California, but maybe the cop was from CA. :) Jerk.

And there is a miminum speed limit, and driving in the left wo passing that have never been enforced.

somehow it is assumed that slow and stupid drivers can't cause accidents.

A southern cop stopped a car and asked the young driver,

"You got any ah-D?"

the kid replied,

" ´bout wut?"

It is interested that your cop knew about the i4. There are hardly flocks of them on the roads.

And regarding physics, teslas can be said to have as much acceleration, if less traction for breaking.

So I wonder whether the CHP gives training classes on new car models.

Should we be flattered to be pointed out as a public menace?

How much is the ticket going to cost you?
$238-$340 depending on the speed he inputs in the system when he logs the ticket.

Regarding points on license and increased insurance costs, we have the ability to do online “traffic school” in California every 18 months for another $30 or so which takes the point off the record, meaning no raised insurance cost.

That's a drag! As someone who shares the same roads as you, I can certainly attest that median speeds on our LA freeways are around 80mph when we are lucky enough to not be stuck in traffic whereas I certainly feel safer passing cars rather than being stuck in a pack. I am constantly scanning upcoming onramps and traffic for a CHP but my luck will run out someday as yours did.

As I recall, you don't have a front plate. If that's still the case, did you get an hassle over that?
I saw him while I passed him, I didn't believe I'd get pulled over for 76 on the express lane or else I would've slowed down, that's never happened. I take no issue with the ticket, the law is the law, I assume the risk of a ticket every time I go above the speed limit. My main issue was the the fact he didn't like I drive an expensive BMW electric, i4 specifically, given his comment to me.

My main reason for the post was to warn my fellow i4 California drivers about this. I didn't believe the i4 was a "chippie" magnet, but apparently it is, for this officer at least.

I don't believe he saw the front of my car, but you're right, I don't have a front license plate.

Maybe he just wanted to see an M50 up close.

Back in my younger days, opting for traffic school meant you didn't have to pay the ticket. Now (as I learned around 4 or 5 years ago) you have to pay the full cost of the ticket even if you are doing traffic school.

I don't think driving in the left lane only to pass is a thing in California but it certainly can be an expensive lesson for a Californian driving in other states.

Have fun in "Traffic School" ugh, what a PIA. Been there and done that . . . more than once.
FWIW I usually set the cruise control at an indicated 75 mph. Set at 75 mph as indicated in the car is actually 72 mph. This same ~5% error is true for both our BMW's and my Porsche. Seems to be a German thing. All of the American or Japanese cars or motorcycles I've had, seem to be able to get it exactly correct . . . . but German cars, nope! The German odometers are correct, it's just the speedometers that consistently read high.

So do you have stickers on your car or did you have a passenger? I immediately starting driving in the HOV lane on the 405 when I got my car thinking I was allowed because I am in an EV but a friend let me know that I actually have to get a permit for that and put those hideous stickers on my fenders so I opted out and ride with the rest.

Yea, you have to have the stickers. FWIW, starting at about 3:30 PM, CHP Motorcycle Officers will sit just south of the I-405/I-110 interchange on I-405 (roughly across from the Porsche Experience Center) checking all the cars in the HOV Lane for two passengers or the stickers. I used to commute that way for many years. I've seen them pull more than just a few folks over.
