California Highway Patrol Officer did not like my i4

This happened yesterday, on one of the busy freeways (I-15), express lane in Southern California. A CHP officer decided to pull me over for speeding, going 76 miles per hour. (of all speeds). He claimed I was going 82, when I passed him, but clearly that wasn't the case. Doesn't matter much in California since even 1 mile over can result in fine.

Anyone that knows SoCal roads, even though the speed limit is 65-70mph on the freeways, up to 80mph is generally the rule of thumb. Keeps things moving for us.

As far as the law goes, totally at fault here, however, he proceeds to tell me: "Just because you have an i4 doesn't mean the rules of physics don't apply". I ended the conversation with him at that point, politely asked if our business is done and I can go.

...but has already been pointed out, it's the increase in insurance, over multiple years, that is the biggest cost. Plus of course, you are 3 points closer to getting banned (12 points within 3 years). A younger me once drove for a year with 11 points on his licence.

in the UK, you may be offered a Driver Education course instead of the fine and points, but you pay for the course, about £90. You only get offered this if you are not speeding too much and you can't have another one within three years.

Some insurance companies ask if you have done one but there is no centralised database they can check to verify your answer.

I don't know if you can take his single snide comment to mean he has it out for i4's in general. Probably just his way of shaming you, as they sometimes feel the need to.
I got pulled out in the country once... I had been following a old POS pickup with crap piled high in the back. He was going real slow, I finally passed him but went a bit too fast in doing so for the officer coming the other way. He tried to shame me for driving so dangerously with my family in the car with me. Bite me. Nothing dangerous about what I did.

This is another law which needs to be changed in the 21st century. Let people exceed the speed limit to pass and then drop back within a reasonable amount of time. Much safer than passing 5mph faster than the slower car to stay within the speed limit.

Right. I deemed the likelihood of a piece of scrap metal falling out of that truck and into my windshield a bit more dangerous than making a safe pass.

Every once in a while you get a grumpy CHP that decides they want to inconsistently enforce the "written" speed limit that day... A couple of years ago on I80 between Vacaville and Sacramento I had a CHP race up to get next to me, get on the loud speaker and say, "Do you want to drive the speed limit, or get a ticket?" I was doing 73mph, was in the middle lane, and there wasn't another car for at least 200yds fore/aft (including sides) besides the CHP..

FWIW this poop never happens in Michigan. You can drive by cops going 80mph and they won't blink.

So many Teslas are sold in California (especially Model 3's) that they have been dubbed the "California Camry." One among many reasons why I'm paying more for an i4.

...and the Michigan State Police have some of the very best research into speed limits, the dangers of speeding, the primary issue of disparity of speeds, and more.

Ohhhhhhh so that's what a Califonia Camry is. I"m stealing that phrase. My wife and I always play a game of how many Teslas we will see going from point A to Point B. It boggles the mind how many we see just driving 3 miles. One thing I can say is I do not believe I will ever see ten i4s in 3 miles and that's fine by me.

Last time I got a ticket I promised myself to use Waze for a year and report speed traps. I typically drive to work early in the morning, just when policemen begin their shifts and at typically the fist person to report speed traps. Revenge is pretty sweet.

I have not gotten a ticket in a while. Last time I got pulled over, I appologized right away, said I was stupid, and got just a warning. I dont know if it always works that way, but I feel like if you start with "I was not doing xyz" your more likely to get a ticket vs warning.

A benefit of age; was recently scolded by megaphone from a CHP behind me to slow down. I was very thankful!

Yeah, round here if you get pulled over its pretty much a guaranteed citation especially if they're on a motorcycle. Maybe anecdotal exceptions here and there, but seldom. Best thing to do is saying nothing, take the citation and based on your situation, go to court, fight or pay. As others have mentioned, its become a driving tax somewhat these days and you can accept or have your day in wonderful traffic court where they often reduce the citation by half.

I actually did get a ticket for the accident I lost my leg in. I went to court and asked the judge for leniency since I already lost the leg, that was a pretty good punishment.

They dropped it to a broken light charge. I could not argue with that, there was photo proof, that light was f$#%ed:

Better go read your state's driving manual, guys. In some jurisdictions you are actually allowed to exceed the speed limit by a specific amount to execute a pass on a 2-lane road. In all my moves for the military, I've read 6 or 7 state drivers' manuals. That's an easy ticket to fight in court if it's applicable to your state if you know 3 things: the speed of the vehicle you passed, the speed at which you passed and the speed limit on the road in question. You can't just barrel up behind someone and blow by them, you've got to match speed behind them, then execute the pass.

...but there are @$$#073 cops everywhere.
I got a ticket for 55 in a 55 zone in Minnesota because I had the audacity to pass a town cop who was driving at 50 on a 4-lane road.
"Do you know why I pulled you over?"
No, the speed limit is 55 and my cruise control was set for 55.
"If you passed me, that means you were speeding."
I'm sorry, say what now? 🤨
...and it was a dang summons ticket, but I was due to get on a plane to Japan in 3 days. That was a royal PITA to deal with, but the points were already gone before I got back to the US. 🤣
