Has anyone gotten this message?

Drivetrain malfunction.

You can continue driving. No roadside assistance required. Reduced engine performance. Have the problem checked by your service center.

hoping this is a minor thing and not serious. Ive had the i4 m50 for a little over a month. No issues otherwise. Drives fine. Just after i was leaving work yesterday and turned the car on from parked that message popped up. I have an appointment tuesday with bmw to look at it.

There are a few threads here on i4talk about this error. Sometimes minor, other times not so minor. I encourage a search on your part...

That's not the "Drive Train Malfunction." That's a stop sale for motor issues.

I had it about 2 weeks ago when get into the car. The message disappeared after I started it. No issues. assumed that it was a glitch.

Got the same drivetrain warning message today on my 1 year old ix3. Car stuttered home for 5 miles, tow truck has taken it and will be delivered to the dealer tomorrow ...... not happy at all. BMW advertise this as having a 280 mile range, best I've managed is 220 during summer, this winter has been as low as 180. This is my first and last EV !

We are in a similar situation with our I4 m50. Make sure you ask for as much detail from the service department. We are getting vague answers, as it seems we have a motor failure. Its been in the service dept for 2 weeks, with no updates except motor failure. We are getting BMW corporate involved.. will send updates.

Also, we had no display errors, just disturbing loud sounds from the front car area, like it was falling apart. Had it towed to BMW dealer immediately.

Any updates on a fix? I suspect the drivetrain mail function is secondary to the high voltage malfunction, at least in my case. Not sure if it’s the same for everyone. I’m very apprehensive and I am not sure what to expect. Car drives fine, and charges fine - but again - not sure what to expect.

So we did not get any error messages. Our front motor ended up being the issue (we had a loud sound - like a propeller plane sound coming from the motor) and the entire front motor was replaced as there was damage.. it took over 45-50 days for the part to come.. we just got the car back. We are in negotiation with bmw for a buyback.. as we prefer not to have a new vehicle that just had it's entire motor replaced.. it was a big job.. the dealership did this the first time.

Yours will most likely be a software update.. but I can give you more info and screen shots in the morning of the recall info. Hope this helps.

hey - thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate it. I double checked my VIN - it’s not part of the recall vehicle list. Moreover, not sure how, but the errors just disappeared by themselves. I went to check something else and those errors weren’t there anymore. Not sure what to make of this.

same thing happened to me. Still took it in - turns out when they looked into it, were some errors that the cars internal system had logged - but it did what any self preserving system would do… rebooted it… to us the errors disappeared but they’re installing the latest software which is not available OTA.

you might want to have that checked out - just in case. If not for anything else, than just to maintain your car warranty

Which version are they installing?

.44 -> .50
Heard back from my dealership. Turns out BMW HQ is aware of this issue - the High Voltage Error and the Drivetrain Error, that popped, as some folks have rightly guessed, on this and similar posts - seems to be a generic error, which in this case was secondary to the High Voltage Error.
They believe it is connected to some of the FAST DC Chargers, particularly the plugs themselves, especially the ones that do NOT unlock in a timely manner after the charging is over. None of us can predict which chargers are gonna behave that way, so they’re pushing an update for this. I believe that’s where .50 comes into play. Not sure if that’s gonna be made available OTA, but the dealerships can definitely update it to that. On that token, my baby’s fine. Upgraded and tested - works like a charm. I just gotta go pick it up tomorrow after work.

Just wanted to keep everyone posted.

The latest remote update fixed my Drivetrain Error.
