Extended Warranty UK

I'm debating whether I extend my warranty on my eDrive40 when it comes to an end next month.

The BMW UK warranty is provided by Allianz. On reading the policy document it appears to be primarily for ICE vehicles. It mentions engine components, gearbox etc etc but no specific EV components. So I contacted BMW and this is the initial reply I received...

For components specific to your electrical, please find what would be covered under the comprehensive cover only.

I was a little worried that the electric motor didn't appear to be covered, so I asked for clarification, this was their response...

The electric motor would be considered for valid claims under the BMW insured warranty.
The warranty does not cover batteries.

I will probably take out the Warranty, but thought I'd share this with the UK group in case others were interested.
I believe batteries in the UK are covered by BMW up to 100k miles or 8 years, if I'm not mistaken...?

Yes, it's effectively an insurance policy issued by Allianz. It may depend on the mileage your car has completed, as it asks for mileage...

ÂŁ752 fully comp, no excess and roadside assistance, ÂŁ665 without roadside
ÂŁ554 fully comp, ÂŁ100 excess and roadside assistance, ÂŁ467 without roadside
ÂŁ447 fully comp, ÂŁ250 excess and roadside assistance, ÂŁ359 without roadside

There is a lower "Named component" level - although all the named components related to ICE cars, not EVs!
Then another lower "Driveline" level - again, all stating ICE components and not EV.

A bit poor of Alianz to offer a product and not update it for the vehicle it's meant to cover!!

I'll try and attach the policy doc...

Something else to consider is whether you have the option to pay monthly rather than annually.

Monthly payments do not change year on year unless Insurance Premium Tax increases (it hasn’t for a while). Annually renewing policies go up every year.

My X6 monthly premium hasn’t changed in years, apart from when IPT has increased. The cost of an engine (the N57 is known to break timing chains) is far higher than the premiums paid.

I would still have expected Allianz to cover the HV Battery though.

I had an extended warranty on my old Range Rover. It wasn't worth the paper it was written on. They held up every single repair – and there weren't many of them – while they thought about allowing the claim, then rejected every one on the flimsiest of technicalities.

I'd never have another one. Just putting the money into an "expensive fix fund" in a separate bank account seems like a more efficient use of funds.

I get that, it is personal preference based on experience, but given the complication of electric motors, inverters, heating/cooling systems and other (relatively) new technology in the i4, I'd rather have a level of comprehensive cover in case something major fails. As also stated by others, it is something you can pass on with the car if you sell it, giving it added appeal to private buyers.
