Hello from a Leaf

Hi there! Long time lurker, first time poster. I originally ordered my i4 eDrive40 sometime in July or August of last year, it's hard to remember now. Probably was earlier than that.

Ran into all of the woes expressed here, parts shortages and delays. But I stuck to my dream build, because dammit if I'm shelling out this much for a new car, I want it to be PERFECT!

And then...in February it almost seemed too good to be true. Scheduled for production, was I hallucinating??
Alas, as many of you have experienced, my baby hung in that status for over a month. Once production began, it was a whirlwind! Refresh in the morning, exterior body assembly begins. Refresh after work, paint booth!!

Before I knew it, she was heading to the port. Not two weeks later, in transit!! But wait, what's that? Back at the port the next day? Hm. Quite the speedrun across the Atlantic.

Yet another long month and a half after the false start, success! My sales rep confirmed -- she's arriving on the Hawaiian Highway! Thank goodness for all the posts about how to track a cargo ship like a stalker. Which, speaking of, the ship is now moored at Brunswick, where my car will be unloaded and sent to the PCD.

Boring finance stuff out of the way, and all I'm waiting for now is that exciting email to set up a date. Can't wait to finally have my hands on a car with range!!
...because yes, my username is a nod to my current vehicle. I've cherished my time with my 2013 Leaf, but now it's time to upgrade. Goodbye, frog car. You converted me to the EV life.

Can't wait to see you all on the road! And nerd out about this amazing vehicle in the meantime :)

Lol! Quite honestly, if Nissan had a Leaf with more comfortable seats and a bigger battery, I probably would have gotten another. Unfortunately their newest model leaves a lot to be desired...but their loss is BMW's gain!

And thank you, I'm honored the omnipresent @ssh decided to grace my post! Can't wait to upload pics!

I'll be interested to hear your comparisons and contrasts...

Thanks, me too, especially when it comes to the soundproofing of the interior. My Leaf is literally silent, even at highway speeds. "Only" got to test drive an M50 on city streets but it sounded promising.

I find mine pretty close to silent, but not completely so. Note the Iconic Sounds may be on (if you have them).

Awesome news! Enjoy the range increase! I came from a ‘19 Etron and it’s been night and day in terms of range. I left the house this morning at 50% SOC. Some family issues came up and I ended up putting 80 miles in today. Pulled in the driveway with 27% left! Getting 4.5 miles per kWh in Sport mode with high regeneration without much effort. You will love it.

Holy moly, I can't even imagine that. 80 miles is about the total range of my Leaf with a 10 year old battery, and it's closer to 60 if I'm doing highway driving. If it's been night and day with your Etron, I can't even begin to imagine the road trips in store with 2 years of free fast charging.
Thanks for the reassurance and glad you love your i4! :)

Cool. My wife has a Leaf 2019 and she likes it, though she has often range anxiety because many times the battery is just enough for her to come home. Nissan got a 60kW version also, and we tested it but felt that the car is the same as ours, except the higher price and better battery. What I mean is that the it didn't feel like a new, 2022 model but a 2018 old, no development. So we went for an EV6 for her, it has better range and better everything else also. It will be here in July, four months before expected delivery. :)

I am not saying this as a "you should have bought and EV6" message. I bought an i4 e40 which will look like this and currently expecting it in July.

Personally I think actually that the front seats of the Leaf are better, more comfortable, than the BMW i4 or the 330e I have now, which have the same seats I will have in my i4. Of course, the BMW looks much better, but their seats are not the best. Some people like them, and I can sit and drive long in the car, but don't find it very comfortable. Anyway, that's just my personal opinion and preference. Life is a compromise, SUVs are generally more comfortable for me but I don't like the shape of SUVs.

Beautiful car!! Hope your delivery date is accurate 🤞
I completely understand what you mean about the new Leafs not feeling like a "new" car. I considered just doing a battery swap on my current car for a 60kWh battery, but it ended up costing close to a new Leaf anyway. Curious to hear how your wife likes the EV6.

Interesting! I found the Leaf's fabric seats compress too much where the seat meets the backing, which led to sciatica on longer drives. However, I'm a bit of an edge case, as my spine is fused into a perfectly straight line -- I was hoping the lumbar support would help remove pressure points on my lower spine/distribute the weight a bit better. I prefer a firmer seat, anyhow. What did you like more about the Leaf's seats? Perhaps they improved them between 2013 and 2019...

Agree with you on SUVs -- that was my one deal breaker for a new EV. Unfortunately that's the bulk of what's offered stateside since we like supersized everything over here 🙄

I have to admit I never took any long trip in our Leaf, so perhaps if I could compare 1:1 then the BMW would win. I can also not comment on older Leaf seats, since this is the only one we ever had, and will have. Anyway, I think that the seat position and height is what makes the Leaf more comfortable. On the other hand, I would hate to drive it on a longer trip because of several other comfort things, like that ridiculous sun shade, which makes no use for me when the sun is from the left because it is far too small. Also the steering wheel is not telescopic and it moves only very little up or down, so all in all, the driving comfort is MUCH higher in the BMW, that's for sure. The fact is, I am so happy that my wife did not see any point in buying the Leaf with slightly larger battery and she wanted a more modern car, because I really don't like driving that car, but whenever I sit in it I always thing that the seats are better for me. Perhaps it's also related to my body size, I am 174cm (5'8.5") and only weight 74kg (163lb). Regardless of which, I wish BMW seats were a bit softer and not had that extendable thigh support, and that the sides were softer also.

I am pretty sure she will like the EV6. We had the car for a weekend and tested it out and she was very positive about it, but her main issue with the Leaf is the range. She needs to drive longer trips now and then and does not want to charge outside home. Also the DC charging of the EV6 is extremely fast, so even if she would need to top it up occasionally it would need minutes only to get here back home, as opposed to the Leaf, which is slow even on fast charging. Also it is difficult to find working Chademo, as opposed to CCS.

I bought an EV6 for my wife last June. She loves it and I was fortunate to drive it until my i4 arrived. Only issue we have had with the EV6 was a recent dead 12 volt battery. Lesson learned to always carry a portable jump starter in an EV.

Ahh, that makes sense! And yes, THE SUN SHADES! What a ridiculous design, nearly useless. Can the thigh supports in a BMW not be lowered? Worried about that as well as a shorter person.
You bring up some excellent cons about the Leaf, though it was bemusing to see included seat warmers/Bluetooth calling but no Bluetooth music/cruise control (at least for my year).

Have you tried the seats in the iX ? Maybe more similar to the seats in the Leaf?

When I had both the iX (rental) and i4M50, and if I drove the iX for a whole day, my back was not that good, but half an hour drive in the i4M50 fixed that.

Hi Leaf!

it looks as though you got a stop sale order at the port.

BMW ships to Bremerhaven then does a quality check there. If they find something they pull it from port to some local shop for the correction, during which it is "in transit"

it was never on the ship

The first time, right? My sales rep said it was likely my car was scheduled for the first ship, but got bumped when older orders that got bumped off a previous ship needed to take mine.
That being said, after Hawaiian Highway officially moored at Brunswick, my car went back to "at the port." Does this mean it was never on the ship, or does it revert to that status when it's at the destination port?
Asking because I might just cry if all of this excitement was for naught, haha.
It reverts.
