Hello from a Leaf

Hi there! Long time lurker, first time poster. I originally ordered my i4 eDrive40 sometime in July or August of last year, it's hard to remember now. Probably was earlier than that.

Ran into all of the woes expressed here, parts shortages and delays. But I stuck to my dream build, because dammit if I'm shelling out this much for a new car, I want it to be PERFECT!

And then...in February it almost seemed too good to be true. Scheduled for production, was I hallucinating??
Alas, as many of you have experienced, my baby hung in that status for over a month. Once production began, it was a whirlwind! Refresh in the morning, exterior body assembly begins. Refresh after work, paint booth!!

Before I knew it, she was heading to the port. Not two weeks later, in transit!! But wait, what's that? Back at the port the next day? Hm. Quite the speedrun across the Atlantic.

Yet another long month and a half after the false start, success! My sales rep confirmed -- she's arriving on the Hawaiian Highway! Thank goodness for all the posts about how to track a cargo ship like a stalker. Which, speaking of, the ship is now moored at Brunswick, where my car will be unloaded and sent to the PCD.

Boring finance stuff out of the way, and all I'm waiting for now is that exciting email to set up a date. Can't wait to finally have my hands on a car with range!!
...because yes, my username is a nod to my current vehicle. I've cherished my time with my 2013 Leaf, but now it's time to upgrade. Goodbye, frog car. You converted me to the EV life.

Can't wait to see you all on the road! And nerd out about this amazing vehicle in the meantime :)

Welcome! @Brittbabbles and @waitingonBabyBlue and I were all on Hawaiian Highway coming over. Brittbabbles and myself are both doing PCD aswell, we might all run into each other down there.

It’ll be likely we’ll all be on the same truck to Greenville! No delivery date for me, yet, but the paperwork part is coming up soon! We may run into each other indeed. :)

Spoke to my CA today after work. He’s saying PCD typically contacts him as soon as the car is leaving VPC. His guess was very early next week but tomorrow is possible. If they’re moving quickly.

I just texted my CA because I’m impatient. Lol. He said something similar. Either an update tomorrow or Monday he thinks. I am really hoping for tomorrow!

Have you tried the seats in the iX ? Maybe more similar to the seats in the Leaf?

When I had both the iX (rental) and i4M50, and if I drove the iX for a whole day, my back was not that good, but half an hour drive in the i4M50 fixed that.
I never drove an iX, but had an iX3 for a month last year as a loaner and I liked to drive that car. Seat comfort was to my taste, but it's a SUV and has only a short range, so it's not my car. Anyway, since I have a 330e with the same seats I am going to get in the i4, I know what to expect, and while it is not the best regarding the seats, I know I'll be happy with the car, and if not, it will not be because of the seats.

I bought an EV6 for my wife last June. She loves it and I was fortunate to drive it until my i4 arrived. Only issue we have had with the EV6 was a recent dead 12 volt battery. Lesson learned to always carry a portable jump starter in an EV.

Gonna chime in and say this is probably an EV issue in general. Had to jump my Leaf's 12 volt on multiple occasions when it ran out of juice and I couldn't keep it in neutral long enough for the tow truck to arrive. Great engineering there, it automatically changes to park when you turn the car off so there's no way to shut it off in neutral.
Also fun fact: if your 12v is dead (along with the rest of the car), the car can't recognize a charging cable trying to give it juice. So you need to jump the 12v first.

I am on the EV6 forum and have seen that you are correct. It may be that they use a simple battery and not a lithium phosphate or AGM.

I had the problem they replaced the battery and no more issues

I have to add that I really loved my 2015 Leaf. It was a fun car. Simple. EV quick if not fast. Solid. Unique. Ultimately I wanted to drive EV to the beach so I traded in for a 2018 you know what. The difference was laughable. Nissan was now ancient and not sure they will ever catch up. You are going to LOVE that new i4!!

I waited 16 months from order time to delivery. Mine showed it was two months on AutoEnergy touring the Spanish Coast and down to Italy, and then back to Norway! I was so pissed. Then I discovered it somehow was switched to the Sebring Vessel probably in Spain and was on its way to California. It arrived in October on a Sunday, and by Tuesday it was at the dealership! I drove to the port hoping to catch a view of the ship sailing in. You must be excited too!

We have never had that problem in our Leaf, or the 330e I am driving now, which I almost exclusively drive in EV mode at least when I am commuting to work. ...but of course, it can happen any day, no one knows when.

Regarding charging when the 12V battery is dead, it is normal that the car is not recognizing the EVSE connection, since the car computer must be fired up and it must check how much charge it needs, at which speed and what is the maximum current your EVSE can deliver, checking battery temperature and all the other necessary facts. But sure, it should be smarter when the 12V is dead, it should start charging the 12V anyway. That charging should be controlled the old analogue way, without the car computer.

Anyway, the 12V battery issue is not Kia specific, it exists in all EVs, including our precious favourite i4... :) We can see several people mentioning it on this forum as well.

I am also on the EV6 forum, but I can't really see that there would be more cases there than here. Also, I believe that Kia sold and delivered many more EV6 than BMW sold and delivered i4, so of course, the absolute number of 12V battery failure should higher for Kia EV6 then for the i4.

The Leaf series is dead. The last models were released this year and after that, there will be no more. Ariya will take over, and that is build on a new EV plattform. Perhaps they will release something new next year also, but not Leaf. The latest, 2023 model Leaf is basically the same as the 2019 model we have... it's old and outdated. Definitely not comparable with the i4, but the Ariya is at least functionally (and price wise) comparable. It's an ugly beast, but nevertheless, comparable and modern, except that display.

I hate that you're right, what a cool EV it was. Wholly unimpressed with the Ariya, when will manufacturers realize there's a niche of EV owners who DON'T want or need an SUV. Agreed that the new Leaf model feels old and outdated. Oh well, Nissan's loss!
