Car 80% charged and the flap won't open.

I'm not calling. I'm dropping by the dealer.
I have an appointment for PPF on Monday.

Not until I stop by the dealer in the morning. I'm not giving anyone an excuse not to service the car.

Did they get a bunch of crappy actuators or what?
Bad design is what it is. No emergency open? WTF????

Did you permanently unlock the charging flap? If not, does doing so solve the problem? (One person claimed it did.)

The issue isn’t the locking mechanism, it’s the push/pull mechanism that actually holds the door shut.
That's one hypothesis, yes. There's evidence to suggest otherwise (look at NCe40's post at the top of this page). We'll see what Techwhiz1's data point says.

Doing this didn't prevent it from happening to me. Toggling it did, however, unlock the flap. In my instance, I think it was a software related not hardware. I agree though it IS a bad design - no emergency release!

That's exactly what it is.
Leaving it permanently unlocked will not prevent this.

I tried locking and unlocking, etc. and nothing worked. It also appears to be an issue on the regular 4 series, but they have a manual release.

Bought a set of air wedges and keep one in the car. Shouldn’t have to, but don’t want to get stuck either. I also put a very thin film of silicone grease (less is more) on the shaft/post that locks the door.

I will take preventative measures in the future.

I wasn't stranded, so no way was I going to force the door.

Now at the dealer and driving a 540i

I’m trying to be very gentle with the flap. Making sure I hear it unlock before pressing lightly on the upper part above the fold line. Then when it’s open making sure that it’s clean inside with no grit. Being usually charged over night at 7kW the flap is open a long time so lots of opportunity for dirt and water ingress. Hopefully I’ll not get the problem.

It’s also not clear to me whether BMW have actually fixed whatever causes this problem.

I got today my new i4 eDrive 40, and I don’t know how to open the charging port. The hatchet won’t open.

The car is unlocked, and I push on the side as I saw the seller do when I tested it.

Why is mine not opening? Maybe it’s faulty?
I’m having the same issue - just happened tonite for the first time. Don’t know what to do. I e had the car for 3 months - 1 month has been spent at the dealer dealing with recalls and the dealership not having a technician familiar with these cars and how to handle the recalls.

My car had this happen after about a month and less than 700 miles. It took awhile for the dealer to diagnose and get parts but ultimately they simply replaced the plastic charging flap (part 51-17-8-737-953) and the two stickers that have info for what the LED colors mean (parts 71-22-8-848-544 and 71-21-9-323-528). So for what's presumably $70 in parts and a fair amount of labor and it's mine again. Hopefully this won't be an issue again...

Same here. Dealer had my car for a week waiting for the parts.

Had it for exactly a week then the flap. Now back hope.

Like a bad parent that give you a toy then takes it away. My car had less than 550 miles when the flap jammed.
