Today I was lucky to see the i4 M50 for the first time here in Copenhagen (and meet a fellow i4talk user :)). The car is simply amazing ! No issue with headroom at the front seats (I'm 186cm). The seats can be lowered a lot so I had plenty of headroom.

At the back the headroom was just enough for me to sit normally. I would assume 190cm is absolute maximum for rear passengers.

I talked with a lot of people at the fair, and everybody was super impressed by the sporty look and the specs. Not a single one talked negative or said they disliked the front grill. The BMW Genius said they have never experienced so many preorders before.

Video playback from USB
I had a USB stick with me with m4a, flac, mp4 and mkv files on. NONE of the video files worked (they didn't show up). Only the music files could be played. My test can be seen in the YouTube video. I talked with the BMW genius and he would assume this could be updated with future OTA updates (but he didn't know anything). Lets hope so we can get some entertainment while charging.

Augmented view / reality
According to the user manual this should be under NAV and SETTINGS. But it was not there! I think I checked all the menus. So I assume (as we feared) that this feature is only for the ix (and 2 series apparently). Really a shame. I also asked the BMW genius about this, and he also said that AR view would not be available for the i4. He didn't know why but assumed it is because of the camera position.

Wireless phone charger
Some have questioned the size of the tray. I tested it with a Samsung S10 and there was about 2cm of free space. My phone is 149.9 mm, so I assume smartphones with a length of 170 mm will fit (manual says 154,5mm, so I am a bit more optimistic).

Chip shortage
I talked with the BMW genius at the fair which assured that the i4 has no issues with chip deliveries. What we hear from other models that don't get wireless charging etc. does not affect i4. Only what have already been removed from the online configurator will be missing (for Denmark that is eSIM and lumbar support in passenger side). So let's hope he speaks the truth. I asked 2 BMW guys and they said the same thing. BMW are prioritizing the EVs and have saved chips for the launch of i4 and iX. And removed features from older BMW models.

HK subwoofer
I removed the cover for the subwoofer to see what is underneath. Some users has written on Facebook i4 groups that it was a amplifier and not sub. I hope this picture can clarity that it indeed is a sub :)

Awesome, @Inside - this is great, and especially appreciate the dimensions of and verifying the wireless charging tray! Much appreciated.

Thank you Inside for posting this👏😃.
What these guys from BMW say is the same as my salesman. I think this is going very well for us i4 buyers🙏
One thing I was wondering ... I really like this frozen portimao blue color, but when I read on various forums it sounds like this is a no go color as fingerprints and dirt is seen so well? What is your impression of this color. "Did it seem as bad" as some would like it to be?

The frozen porimao blue looks like the perfect color for this car! It was just beautiful. I talked with the BMW guy about it and he would not recommend buying it. Scratches cannot be removed by polish and he said that leaving bird droppings on the paint for more than a weekend would ruin the lacquer for good. So it requires very high maintenance.

Maybe it is better to wrap it in a "frozen" color after taken delivery.

@Inside @krifosjen if you can take a look, I will be curious to see the interface of these settings:
  • Vehicle apps >Charging >Current limit
  • Vehicle apps >Charging >Fan loudness
  • Vehicle apps >Driving settings >Drivetrain and chassis >[any drive mode] individual
  • Vehicle apps >System settings >Data privacy

and the effects of this one :
  • Vehicle apps >Interior lighting >Ambience >Dynamic light

Was afraid of that ... just love that shade of color. Have regular "Portimao Blue Metallic" on my order now so it's as close as you get I guess ... I think this color brings out the shapes in the car better than the darker colors. Especially when no sun and in the cloudy days ...

I can answer what dynamics they react on. But I do guess it will be hard to be shown in a video at a public car event.
It is described as 4 events, welcome and goodbye lights, when doors are open and when the phone is ringing.

thx! Indeed, Dynamic light = 4 events. So we only adjust the color of the ambient light? There is no dynamic effect like in the EQS? It's not very funny

 Indeed.

For that and other things, like AR, I'm now certain that the CPU of i4 is inferior.
Unless they are planning to have them as apps for €99.99 or something.

CPUs are more than sufficient for decades to drive ambient light and generate AR, imho it's a 100% marketing choice: i4=sport, iX=tech
My experience, from other devices (including TVs) is different.
You may have a powerful 16-core CPU in your PC but your 5000€ TV has a mere 4-core crappy CPU and it shows when you try to play a 4K 10bit HDR 7.1 video file.

4k, 10bit video requires many more resources than doing minimalist AR

but...
a TV can cost 5k€!?
4K 10bit HDR is used on TV ?
I'm really late, watching SD videos on SD TV

My point was that they cut corners whenever they cant!
A 65.000 or 80.000 euros car doesn't mean that they put inside it a state-of-the-art CPU!

Obviously I hope I'm wrong and that will have these things as apps at their store!
(Wow. I just "hoped" that they will make us pay more!)

[EDIT] I'm not so sure that AR is that minimalistic. It has to do realtime tracking of the road and surroundings to project the arrows. etc.
