Popped up for me today on idrive 8. Seems I'm finally getting them again after I stopped getting them after 03/2024. I'm assuming the dealership installing the 03/2025 recall version software last month kickstarted the OTA for me.

It's more to do with the fact that BMW haven't been releasing any OTA updates for iDrive8.

Last OTA update for iDrive8 was 07/2024 and I'm not sure if anybody in NA got that. Will be interesting to see if we finally get an OTA update in Europe.

I received mine last night as OTA.

What about iDrive 7? Anyone had any updates for that?

ETA: Just spoke to a "genius".

"For iDrive 7, updates are still provided, but they may not be as frequent as those for newer systems."

No **** Sherlock! My last update was 07/2024. I guess we don't matter any more.

Yeah, outside of major bug fixes or recalls that can be fixed in software, I'd consider iDrive 7 to be end-of-life regardless of whether or not BMW officially says so. I think that once NK comes out, all of our iDrive versions will probably, in practice, be EoL. Outside of fixing CarPlay bugs, which I don't expect to happen anyway, I can't say it really matters to me - iDrive 8/8.5 is probably as feature-complete as it's ever going to be. I'd love to have geofencing options, but if they aren't there by now I don't think they ever will be.

As long as the car battery is in manufacturer warranty, there is still a chance that updates might come to fix issues on battery and all related systems. Features (in a sense of new configurable items in menus) are done and I do not see any new things popping up which would require implementation now.
I would like to have battery temperature on instrument cluster instead of having to connect with mobile via OBD2 to have it. At least ABRP shows it now.

OTA. I've had OTA updates only since I've had the car.

As far as I know that is. My car has never been in for a recall and I can't imagine the dealer installing new software for fun.

Yeah, that's kind of the downside with traditional auto makers – they're car companies that just happen to write software, and only then because they're forced to. Whereas Tesla, Rivian, etc. are computer companies that happen to make cars, so the software gets updated more often, etc. Given pretty much everything about Tesla, I'll gladly trade-off slower, less robust software development if it means actually getting a good car.

I have just received this but haven't had time to install it. Right now I am drinking coffee, which is more important for me. Anyway, if the "upgrade" contains what it says, i.e. "Improved AC charging then there is no reason for hurry, since I never had any problems and mine can't be improved. They should instead have a full list of differences between "my" version and the upgrade, because I really think (hope) there is more.

I also received the update notification on the phone. The car was also reporting that there is a new update.

But it fails the update transfer at 10% and then says there is "no update". After a few minutes the update reappears again. Tried it twice but same outcome.

Restarted iDrive with holding power button for 30 seconds before leaving car and will try tomorrow.

Anybody experienced this before? All previous updates installed fine on first try.

i did it and didnt notice any difference. AC charging has worked for me 99% of the time over the past 30 months.

I think BMW is not honest with us. The update was pushed out fast in Europe without any (for us) visible contents. They are mystical about the "general improvements" and the bug fixes. I think they pushed this update out fast to prevent some serious break downs and perhaps a recall. This version has no valuable visible contents. There is no global issue with AC charging which really needed this. Something else is in there which was REALLY important for the car, but we don't know what.

#39 ·
For me personally it seems that the update broke something that didn't need fixing. I experience a very unstable public AC charging experience, every time I open the BMW App charging stops. Maybe it is a bug in the local public charging station and a huge coincidence. We'll see.

I basically never use public AC chargers, but if it is this problem also with private AC charging then I will definitely not be happy. I mean, how does the car sense that it is a public or private AC charger it is connected to? There is no communication between them, the car requests a certain current and that's it. That request is the same as with any other AC charger. I haven't charged since I made the update, but will notice it immediately if it will behave like you describe.

My M50 remains on 07/2024.30 with no further updates available at the moment.

They/BMW can do the OTA all they want. Sometimes it's a good method for some BMW owners if the OTA actually works (occasionally). But I wish they'll just put the software on their website and we all can download it to our USB sticks and install it ourselves.

They're the New Jersey gas station of car manufacturers. They don't trust we can load an update from a USB drive.

*for our non-US members who may not know, in the state of New Jersey, you cannot pump your own gas, a station attendant must do it for you. It's for "safety" reasons.

This update is the first time - that I did not got it before NA customers got it.
So not a fast push to Europe - but a rather slow one.

This might be because of the recall in USA : "Suddenly" loss of power.
Needed to be done first in US - and then we are getting it later.

With the new Service Model, every vendor in every industry try to take - the vendors takes more responsibility - but it also often result in customers feeling lost - without information they had in the old world.

I don't know how many updates you have received before this one, I have received only one, and that came looong after NA. This is called 07/2025 and considering it is still August, I call that fast.

Yes, I suspect that it has to do with the "Sudden loss of powe" thing. That was exactly my point earlier, which BMW doesn’t want to tell us, so they invented this AC charging instability issue.

I saw a service bulletin for my VIN about "sudden shutdown of drivetrain" or something, so a part of this might indeed be a silent update.
As a software engineer (lol, yes I did study CS) I often think about what could be done with open firmware for the i4. That would be a technical wonderland.

I had a short exchange by mail with someone who worked on the i4 firmware, all he had to tell was it's .. complicated, and that secure coding was necessary to stop the worst nonsense that was going on.

I haven't seen anyone mention it but the one (minor) visible change is the inclusion of altitude on the main navigation screen A nice little detail as I do like to see the altitude when driving in the mountains!

It was already available on one of the widgets but I had to dig around for it a little bit.

Mind you I was a little bit confused at first when it seemed to be turning on/off but then I realised this was when I was going through a tunnel and it loses the GPS connection

I just received the update and had a small drive. Am I the only one to find the system much more responsive? For me the best example is that there is no more drop in frame rate when in map mode on the instrument cluster (especially visible in the epower gauge)

The system was not slow before but sometimes a bit laggy so I’m really happy with the update!

I haven't noticed anybody in the UK report it, so just letting you know that I got the update OTA and successfully installed today on iDrive 8.0
