Self Driving Hardware - i4 vs i5

Does anyone know what the difference is between the DAPP hardware in the i4 and the DAPP in the i5? Why does the i5 allow for hands free while we have to constantly touch the steering wheel?

Thanks in advance - Its Friday and its been a long week and I'm too lazy to do my own research... :)

I haven't done any research either, but I'd be surprised if the i5 DAPP is truly "hands free".
It is though, truly handsfree up to 120km/h (75ish mph?) :)
I'm pretty sure it has the newest gen hardware, in comparison to the i4 which is - to my knowledge - sharing the hardware with its 5 year old G20/21 sibling, so it will probably have more computing power as well as better vision and more range for all the sensors.

The i7 already offers hand free driving on freeways in the US. It's not level 3. The driver is still responsible. It's just replacing the steering wheel nag with eye monitoring.

From my research and interpretation of the information out there, the core ADAS system in the current i4 differs from the iX, i7 and now the i5 and that the cameras, algos, and other hardware are what allow for the newer features like higher speed handsfree modes. BTW, those hands free modes are still dependent upon the drivers eyes being on the road.

The i4 already provides hands free driving under 40mph, but doubtful it will be expanded to greater speeds unless newer ADAS tech is brought in...maybe w/ the LCI model.

If you can get past all the technical jargon, I'm pretty sure you can piece together the info from:

The i4 has iDrive 8, the 5 year old G20 has iDrive 7 (or older), so I doubt it's the same hardware. In fact, there have been updates even between now and five years ago on the G20, the latest models have iDrive 8, but mine (2020 model) has iDrive 7.
i4s Driving assistance pro is dated to old g20 3series era from 2019. With some updates but hardware and software is essentially the same. All new cars such as iX, X1 and i7 have the new system, which is obviously the current system.

Unless BMW has decided to stop deactivating the DAPP immediately upon confusion, I wouldn't take my hands off the wheel in any BMW. I use DAPP often and it's wonderful, but when it gets confused it shuts off instantly. This could easily lead to an accident if the driver doesn't have hands on the wheel.

The new 2024 X5 has the updated DAPP with hands free at a higher speed too. It’s just the new generation of software and hardware, not sure on the specifics but I presume it’s more robust and has undergone additional validation.

That said I agree the hands free is a bit of a red herring, I always have a hand on the wheel either way.
i4 has EyeQ4 and iX, new 5 and 7 have EyeQ5.

EyeQ5 is reportedly 10x the processing of EyeQ4.
So EyeQ5 is able to process input data to support higher speed.
