Just bought an i4 and am a new Forum member, so apologize if my post below was answered previously. Where can I find out technical details on the battery (cell, chemistry, where manufactured,....) and battery management system (wiring diagram, thermal runaway protection,...), beyond what is provided in owner manual, MyBMW, Drivers Guide? Thanks.

That sort of detail will probably only be found in the BMW Technical Instruction System (TIS) which isn’t available on the web, other than to main dealers. There is a pay-to-use system offered by BMW though it isn’t cheap.

I've been on this forum for a long time and still haven't seen specific details. I believe that the battery for the i4 is manufactured by CATL in Germany, but BMW also uses AESC as a supplier.

Just a note that even the repair manuals I noted will not have detailed information such as individual components or suppliers. The best you'll get is basic high-level description of what the entire HV unit assembly is comprised of, the wiring of the assembly to other parts of the car, etc. It's basic abstracted information, meant for general consumption.

There's no detailed "engineering" documentation publicly available, that I am aware of.

Starting in 2013 with the i3, BMW’s first EV was followed by the i8, the iX and the i4 -- all packed with Samsung SDI’s high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Both iX and i4 installed Generation 5 batteries.

Be a little careful here. The batteries are designed by BMW and manufactured in partnership with Samsung. These are not "generic" Samsung batteries!

Well I would also be very interested in those informations. Maybe someone can salvage a battery from a totaled i4 and disassemble it :D

The pouches should be labled in some way, maybe one can run some tests on individual cells and finde documents to these cells.

Videos of BMW making batteries are available on line. As said earlier, wiring diagrams, cell module construction, capacity and other technical data is available from BMW via their paywall.

Believe we all have NMC-811 Gen5 batteries, thanks for post. Have a project with same Samsung battery design delivering collected solar energy to grid. So far, battery life has been good with little degradation but we typically charge battery to 90% SOC during day and discharge to 10% SOC during evening grid peak (1 cycle/day). Still searching i4 battery management logic. Used i4 battery for sale on eBay for $10k. Looking forward to Gen6+ solid state with supposed 600 mi/charge in late 2025.

I’m now trying to find out if our batteries are single crystal or polycrystalline. Google search turns up lots of research but I haven’t found any indication that BMW or Samsung have moved to single crystal construction.
