Sorry if this one exists already. Can’t find any answers.
I saw that the i5 will have the availability for 85mph hands-free highway driving. I’m currently sitting on the 40mph and under with mine. Anyone find info about this being accessible when the 8.5 OTA update is released? Would be crazy to think the hardware is that significantly different between i5 professional driving package and i4… but not out of the question of course.

The i5, iX and i7 along with ICE variants have a newer ADAS processor than what is in the i4.

Yeah, i4 uses older MobilEye.

The i4 should be capable of hands free at 80MPH.

They were both designed for L3. The newer processor is faster though.

Um, what 8.5 OTA update?

I think the only thing that has been confirmed by BMW so far (please correct me if I am wrong) is that new i4s will get 8.5. An OTA (or any kind of) update for existing i4s is still unknown.

Can I also suggest that if you have unanswered questions about 8.5, you ask them in the existing thread - BMW Announce iDrive 8.5 and iDrive 9

Forums work best when all the information in a topic is kept in one place. It saves a lot of repetition, especially as what we have at the moment is mostly speculation!

Yes, from an Intel-based embedded PC to a slightly newer Intel-based embedded PC. And possibly not even that for the i4 (which might not even get the full MGU22, but a revision to the existing one instead).

And none of the user-facing features of iDrive 8.5 presented to the press so far look like they couldn't run on existing hardware as well.

There is no magic in all of this. iDrive 8.5 is mostly a UI update for the existing underpinnings, unlike iDrive 9 - which is essentially the exact opposite: A big change under the hood with mostly the same UI.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon is a newer Intel-based embedded PC? No no... its ARM.

Ah more info in German about the updates:

iDrive 9 is running on ARM.
iDrive 8.5 is still running on an Intel-based system.

[edit]: Interesting, there seems to be conflicting information floating around.

[edit 2]:
Okay, my previous information, that MGU22 would still be Intel-based, just using a successor to the Intel A3960 chip used in MGU21, was incorrect.

Multiple places (including the article you linked) state that MGU22 is ARM-based. Sorry, my mistake for not catching that sooner.

Still, I don't see anything in the user-facing features presented for 8.5 so far, that would strictly require a different chip. It's really mostly some UI layout changes. And given that iDrive 8.0 also runs on MGU22 makes me think that their codebase is not strictly bound to a specific target architecture anyway. This will likely be different for iDrive 9 (given the switch to Android Automotive), though.

Personally, I mainly want things like a YouTube app to be available, for things like longer charge stops or for times when you have to wait in the car for some time. And that app has been made to run on pretty much anything at this point, including many years old TVs and streaming-sticks with crappy little SoCs that have a fraction of the power of what MGU21 has. And BMW has been teasing things like that for quite a while now.

no problem

here you can find a lot of information about the MGU22 including pictures (inside too)

I had the possibility to sit in the i5 due to an invitation from my dealer. The car was apparently a pre-production model where some parts aren't up to BMWs expected spec, they told me. However, the car was underwhelming. But it already had iDrive 8.5. I played a bit around with it and must say it is far worse than the videos show. You can show the map, the mymodes or the weather app for the whole screen, but all the other widgets are within the small square on the left. It was annoying to navigate in this tiny little square.
From what I saw, it should be very easy to update 8.5 as it is mainly the front end and the climate menue that looks different. But after trying it out, I'm very happy with 8.0.

I asked them wether we will get it and they said no, due to the different head unit. I said them that the customer support told me we will get it. Confused faces. So who the hell knows.

On a side note, as I was there I noticed the i4M50 sits a bit lower than my eDrive40 without the adaptive suspension. According to the data sheet, the ground clearance should be the same for both (125mm). Anyone knows more about that? Is the M50 really lower? The BMW "Genius" didn't had an answer.

Hello everyone,

Based on my understanding, the iDrive 8.5 system upgrade is approaching soon. I would like to clarify whether this upgrade will be available for all vehicles or exclusively for the 2023 car models?

I'm struggling to find something official on this, on BMWblog it says that the i4 will get it without mentioning a specific production year or smth. It seems only a UI update rather than any particular new functionality...
I guess we will see soon! July is the month when the sw upgrade should hit our cars...
