Hope it isn't as bad as my two issues i have had so far, one was also needed to tow the car away from my garage something about the gear shifter din't want to put the car in to any gear so it had to be towed to dealer, and this latest issue was a drivetrain issue and high voltage issue but on a closer inspection it turned out to be a driveshaft issue something about metallic piceses that had broken off and caused the issue. BMW apperently had some knowledge about the issue but they simply don't know how many are effected atm so lets hope you aint one of them been without the car for two weeks now.

So i got the car back today as of a miracle from somewhere, so i asked them to explain it a bit closer to me what exactly the issue was and what was causing this, so the service guy came out of the back and explained to me and stay with me while i try to explain it, In the electric engine, there is this type of "Brushes" the same type of idea that you will find in a battery driven screwdriver, these brushes have some small "gaps" between them and they are very sensitive to short circuit, inside between this gaps thats were metallic was stuck that was causing a short circuit in the rear engine but the car was still drive able due to being an AWD version so it pretty much if i understood him right it "Cut off" the rear engine completely and let me drive it in FWD mode to the service centre witch is why it suddenly felt a bit "sluggish".

So all in all BMW knows about this issue so far its been only two vehicles that they are aware of and that was one m50 also with it and mine, more might show up in the near future but good to know that they know how to fix it.

Hope you guys wont suffer from this but good to have the car back and as a bonus they updated my software to the latest version that is 07/22, sense BMW seems to be real slow to drop this OTA updates to the cars.

Interesting. This goes back to the question about whether the "brushes" method is inferior to the permanently excited motors others are using. If I'm reading you correctly, some other metal somehow was getting the brushes causing a short circuit, it wasn't a problem with the brushes?

Not sure if this is the correct place to post, but hoping so.

I finally got my BMW i4 M50 last Saturday after a horrible dealership experience and a long wait (I ordered it in August 2021). I loved driving the car for the first few days. Today I set out on my first long drive (going to my great-grandmother's funeral) and stopped to charge about 1.5 hours away from home. I charged it to 95% to prepare for the 3 hour drive, and as soon as I pulled back onto the interstate I had a "drivetrain malfunction" message pop up on the screen. Immediately after that, I received a "power supply" message that noted I should stop immediately and that it was unsafe to drive. I pulled over and called BMW assist, they called a tow truck that took 2 hours to get there.

When the tow truck got there my car had just stopped working completely, which I found very strange. The first hour of waiting for the tow truck I sat in the car and everything was on, the buttons all worked, it was drivable, etc. But after the first hour, my husband came and got me, and we sat in his car and waited for the tow truck. And when the tower tried to turn the car on to shift it into neutral it was completely dead. No lights, no power, key wouldn't open the trunk, nothing.. So they had to drag my brand new car onto the flatbed (I died a little inside).

Anyway, it finally arrived at my dealership like 5 hours after the initial breakdown. They have no idea what caused it and are going to have some BMW techs come in and look at it. They gave me a ****ty little 3 series that smells like someone puked in it to compensate for missing my great grandma's funeral and having my brand-new car die after 3 days. I'm bummed.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Not as an extreme experience, but I have had my i4 since May 30 of this year, and have had it in the shop twice for intermittent messages:
"Drivetrain malfunction" and "high voltage battery". I am bringing it in for the 3rd time in early November to have a part replaced that they had to wait a couple of weeks to get from Germany. Car has worked fine, but the indicator lights and beeps every time I start the car are annoying...

An update: car is still at the dealership, they can’t figure out what’s wrong with it. I guess there is also cosmetic damage to the rear of the vehicle. BMW didn’t tell me this.. instead I received a phone call from a damage mediation specialist inquiring about how the towing company picked up my vehicle. Apparently the tow truck driver is claiming that the damage was done by BMW during offloading, and BMW is blaming the towing company. I don’t care who is to blame, honestly. As of now I’m feeling like I don’t have a new car at all because what I am left with is a car that doesn’t run AND has been damaged cosmetically. What a joke. Anyone know how I should handle this? Do I start looking into lemon laws once my cars been there for a month? Would it be better to cut my losses?

Unfortunately seems like an all too common problem. Just took delivery 11/15/2022 of 23 e40 and 3 days later I’m stuck on the side of an on-ramp waiting for roadside assistance for 4 hours with no heat in 30* weather. “Drivetrain malfunction” and high voltage warning. Unable to drive or turn the car ‘on’ and slowly over the 4 hours of waiting more functions continued to fail. Eventually no lights, couldn’t open the tailgate, etc etc. Between the roadside assistance (or lack there of) and this malfunction. I am left with a very strong desire to get my money back and part ways, if even possible.

Wow, how crazy that the exact same thing happened to you! Was this right after you charged as well? I hate to assume your situation will be like mine, but I am currently still without a car after 1 month. Every time I contact the service department they tell me they're waiting on a special cable or piece of test equipment specifically for my car. So there's been 0 resolution thus far. I just contacted BMW NA yesterday to start the process of buyback.. I'm not going to spend months without a car while still paying for it. Ugh.

Has anyone gotten this message?

Drivetrain malfunction.

You can continue driving. No roadside assistance required. Reduced engine performance. Have the problem checked by your service center.

hoping this is a minor thing and not serious. Ive had the i4 m50 for a little over a month. No issues otherwise. Drives fine. Just after i was leaving work yesterday and turned the car on from parked that message popped up. I have an appointment tuesday with bmw to look at it.

There are a few threads here on i4talk about this error. Sometimes minor, other times not so minor. I encourage a search on your part...

That's not the "Drive Train Malfunction." That's a stop sale for motor issues.

Today while pulling out of an automated car wash my i4m50 starting peppering me with errors. First was "High-voltage system - You can continue to driving. Please have the system checked by your nearest service center to prevent malfunction ...." followed immediately by "Drivetrain - You can continue driving. Have the problem checked bv your service center" and then by "Reduced parking assistance"

Has anyone else experienced any or all of these messages? The iconceirge says nothwithstanding the messages that I should have the vechicle towed to the dealership (but of course the dealer doesn't have any loaner vehicles until the middle of next month). I'm trying to gauge how serious the error might be and see if I can make it until the weekend before getting the car in.

I have the exactly same issue as yours today. How did you sort it out on the end?

Got the same drivetrain warning message today on my 1 year old ix3. Car stuttered home for 5 miles, tow truck has taken it and will be delivered to the dealer tomorrow ...... not happy at all. BMW advertise this as having a 280 mile range, best I've managed is 220 during summer, this winter has been as low as 180. This is my first and last EV !

We are in a similar situation with our I4 m50. Make sure you ask for as much detail from the service department. We are getting vague answers, as it seems we have a motor failure. Its been in the service dept for 2 weeks, with no updates except motor failure. We are getting BMW corporate involved.. will send updates.

Thanks for the info. Yes I found an article from bmw and our car did exactly what it stated. See below. We took delivery November 15th week. I'll have to find the build week, but we got this car after someone else cancelled and it was on the way to the dealership. I am positive this is will take a long time, especially since ours is a sold unit and already been used for 1.5 months. I am going to the dealership today and will hopefully find out more.
