I think I'll wait a bit, until Tesla actually allows it's use. These adapters have been "coming soon" for quite a while. As I recall, Tesla released a T2CCS adapter in Korea about 2 years ago (Tesla Says a CCS Adapter for US Owners Is on the Way) using that now infamous phrase, "coming soon" for the US. That was later up-staged by the Magic Dock program. Other examples are A2Z EV - EV Accessories - Charging Adapters - Charging Stations , and another start up I posted about a while ago but am too lazy to look up. I often can be considered an early adopter and have hopes for the future, but this starts looking too much like typical Tesla hype. Once Tesla supports it's use, fine, hopefully, soon. I do recognize that may create some availability challenges, but I'll take that risk and hold my $ for a known working, authorized product. I'm in no hurry to spend my charging $ with Tesla, anyway.

From the email I got says this...

We've worked tirelessly with all major automakers that have announced or considered the transition to the Tesla Charging Standard to create a trusted, reliable Tesla Supercharger to CCS adapter, bridging the gap in fast EV charging.
Using the Lectron VORTEX Plug, owners of BMW, Fisker, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Rivian, Toyota, and Volvo EVs will have uninterrupted access to Tesla Superchargers, enabling fast charging of up to 150 miles in just 15 minutes!
The VORTEX Plug enables any EV using the Tesla Charging Standard to access the Tesla Supercharger network. Experience lightning-fast charging speeds at more locations and reduced wait times.
Join the revolution for only $199.99* and be among the first to get your hands on the VORTEX Plug.

But when you look at the page doesn't say BMW, anyway I sent them an email and we'll see what they say about compatibility and when they think one can use it.

It seems that you may have been hiding under a rock this week. BMW has announced that they have reached an agreement with Tesla.

In the meantime, I'm not a huge fan of buying a digital render months before it is going to be sent and more than a year before I'll be able to use the real world product it is supposed to represent.

Lectron is a much more reputable company for this than others—including Tesla. I'm not saying I'll preorder right away, but this will be the one I get when it's time.

As I read the press release, it only indicated that BMW's with the NACS connector from the factory would have access to Tesla Chargers. It did not specifically indicate that pre 2025 models would have access using an adapter. Doesn't mean it won't happen, but not specifically indicated as I read it.

Here's the exact text of the press release again. It specifically says CCS cars will get access.

"drivers of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce Combined Charging System (CCS) battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the U.S. and Canada will gain access to designated Tesla Supercharger stations in early 2025"

I'm glad to see it happening, but like others, I will wait until I can actually use it. No sense in spending $200 now, when it will likely be at least a year, and probably longer, before I have a chance to use it.

However, I will gladly spend the $200 when (if) BMW and Tesla actually get it ironed out.

Can’t say for sure about models produced at any given time, but the press release did specifically say that CCS vehicles would get access to designated superchargers.

“ BMW of North America and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars NA announced today that drivers of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce Combined Charging System (CCS) battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the U.S. and Canada will gain access to designated Tesla Supercharger stations in early 2025.”
But does this mean the current dozen or so Tesla stations with integrated CCS adapters, or all V3 and V4 chargers in the field with your own adapter? If the former, not much help.

#17 ·
This is overreading into it. Why sign a deal at all for the former, it would be pointless and different from the deal every other manufacturer has signed.

I would not buy a random third party adapter right now. I highly doubt Tesla will allow any adapter to be used on their superchargers. These things draw an insane amount of electricity, and there is too much risk of a fire or even a melted adapter putting a charger out of service. I'm sure there will be a set of approved adapters next year.

I'm happy with my Lectron J1772 adapter which I used at my mom's house, I'd be willing to buy this when we can actually use them.

Until then, I'd like to see if BMW offers adapters at a good price to CCS owners and how the BMW network is coming along by 2025. I'm not going to be without one of these - just don't see any urgency either.

Let me wait until I hear more about compatibility with bmw.

It ptobably will, but I will wait to hear more.

I got (likely) the same email that OP received (presumably because I bought one of their Tesla to J1772 adapters before I understood what that meant). Since it invited anyone to reply with questions, I sent them this:

“It’s one thing to physically plug in, but another to have that plug authorized by the Tesla network. Do you offer assurance that this adapter will be accepted by the Tesla network and charging a non-Tesla authorized using this adapter? I have a BMW and would love to use your adapter; I just don’t want to buy a pig in a poke.”

We’ll see what marketing BS I receive in response…

Finally got a “response” to my inquiry about the Lectron adapter:

“We apologize for the late update. We actively engage with most automakers and internationally recognised labs (UL & ETL) to ensure the compatibility and reliability of the Lectron Vortex Plug.

It's important to note that Tesla does not offer guarantees for third-party compatibility. For the most up-to-date guidance on using non-Tesla charging adapters with their Superchargers, we recommend reaching out to Tesla directly.”

Note, I wasn’t asking if Tesla offers a guarantee. I was asking if Lectron would warrant its usability. Clearly, they’re unwilling to do so, prefering to have their customers take that risk and hope that Tesla will permit its use. As many of us surmised, there’s no good reason to give them $200 for the chance that this adapter will be authorized by Tesla, except perhaps hope.

These are supposed to ship this month. Anyone get a shipping notice yet?

#33 ·
It's January 19th. I ordered January 3rd. I used $10, 5% off discount plus $13.30 in tax. $203.29 total I haven't heard anything about shipping it yet. Been getting spammed daily by their emails, they keep offering me 5% off my next purchase. I have initialized a new Tesla account, so it will be ready when my adapter arrives. Who knows if there will be a new app or what? Just now got another email from Electron Hey, We noticed you were checking this item & we still have a limited supply in stock! Get 5% OFF when you use code 4R648BWD at checkout! Snatch it up before it sells out!

I would encourage people not to take the risk on an unapproved charger. We don't know if Tesla will officially allow Lectron chargers or not, and there's good reason to believe they won't. There is an incredible amount of energy flowing through these DCFC stations. You don't want to be in a position where you are liable for a melted charger connector not just on your car but on the charger itself, or heavens forbid a fire. Spend the extra dollars and get a supported adapter.

#36 ·
I will be absolutely shocked if Lectron doesn't get whatever approvals are necessary. Their Tesla line-up is extensive, including a CCS to Tesla adapter which would have the same characteristics as those you mention in terms of power passing through them.

I pre-ordered October 21st, so I would hope that mine would get shipped before yours, Ricky.

I've written Lectron to see what they have to say about this. I'm sure they'll technically be able to handle it, but they should indemnify users, too.

In the unlikely event of damage to the charger caused by an adapter, it would get interesting. We do see Charger T&C's that put responsibility on the user. With or without Lectron indemnification, the charger company would/could seek to subrogate -everyone looks for deeper pockets. If it's only your car, that should be between you and Lectron, but they could deflect that you used the adapter where prohibited by the charge supplier. Messy.

It will be interesting to see if the adapters Ford sends out for their Mach e owners will work with the i4 (for those of us who own both EVs of course)

#45 ·
That is just a CYA thing by EVgo. Nobody even noticed it until EA made an announcement with a similar restriction.
What will prevent i4 drivers from access to V3 and V4 Superchargers until 2025 is that authorization will almost certainly be through the Tesla app, and we will almost certainly still be restricted to only Magic Dock stations.

Yes but if I use my Mach e adapter and my account for my Mach e/Tesla supercharger. I should be able to use the same adapter and account to charge any vehicle with a CCS1 charger port.
