Hi,
The topic is pretty old ... but I have bad news for us all :
On a 2 years old and 24.000 km eDrive40, I had a message saying "check cinematic chain"; diagnostic from BMW after 3 weeks searching is "Brushmodule" needs to be cleaned or replaced. Only cleaning costs 2.000€ ... the so called "BMW Premium Selection" used car warranty does not take in charge ! I'm waiting for BMW France's answer ... that will perhap's take in charge. Wait & see.
 
Should be a couple hundred thousand miles before brushes require cleaning/replacing. We have at least one user that is approaching 200,000km fast and hasn’t had this issue. Should be covered by warranty given how quick it happened. Let us know !

An interesting issue. Could be considered wear and tear but for sure this should be something not required until after many, many miles of use. Motor brushes are for sure a normal wear item but if so BMW should have identified it within their maintenance schedule published for this vehicle.

For sure a debatable issue with BMW and I'd hope they would accept it as their responsibility after such little time/miles.

We need more research on this!

The motor brushes along with the decision BMW made on the irreplaceable charge port both make me think I won’t buy this car out of my lease. Love the car for now though!

And how big chance for this happening to you ? I am not worried yet.

During the warranty, unlikely. Even to 100,000, maybe even 150,000 unlikely. Insurance would cover the charge port replacement if it is ever damaged from a third-party charger.

You’re right, but there is still room for improvement and I hope to see it with the next generation!
 
Considering that it could take me 20-25 years to hit those mileage numbers, I'm not super worried. 😜

Thank you @Flyingman ! very interesting ! ... I now understand why it costs 2.000€
but I still don't understand why a wearing part is so difficult to access for simple cleaning or replacing.
At least you dont have to drop the engine to change the oil filter!:p

I've just had an answer from BMW France ; they will take only 80% of the bill in charge (22.000km!). Fortunately the BMW car dealer takes the 20% remaining. Not funny : a workshop employee entrusts me they've just had a 2nd 2022 i4 with exactly the same issue. Difficult to trust the car from now on...although it is amazing to drive!
 
Hi. Motorbrushes cleaning (and probable replacement ?) still in -very slow- progress ... Almost 2 months patience since 2/5.

Just crazy that the motor needs to be removed to service brushes. BMW should make the car more serviceable. I replace brushes in small motors often and usually there is a separate access to make it easy.
