This just reiterates what I think we all know: EVs make tons of sense if you have the ability to charge at home, but if you're going to be reliant on level 3 charging, or will be forced to use it frequently, it worsens that value proposition significantly. Unless the cost of level 3 charging comes down to at least parity with gas, EVs just aren't going to make sense for at least some portion of the driving public. There are some people who drive significant distances on a regular basis, and paying more to refuel isn't going to be a winning argument.

I understand that gasoline is significantly, though quietly, subsidized in the US which is definitely putting a thumb on the scale. But since I don't foresee that changing any time soon, it's a hurdle that EVs are going to have to overcome at some point, if they can.

The comparison listed here surprised me since I've read many examples online where the "biggest" subsidy to fossil fuels was the damage they did to people's health and environment being uncompensated.

What also makes sense to me is how much wealth a barrel of oil brings the consumer - a lot more than it costs to mine it!

"A barrel of oil is a significant economic resource, containing energy that can produce over $200,000 worth of economic output, often priced around $58 to $62 per barrel as of October 2025. This makes oil a highly valuable commodity in global markets, influencing various sectors and economies."

Both my wife and I drive EV's - my basic reason is to avoid giving Putin any more mob money in his criminal enterprises - but all the Joe six-packs drive their guzzling behemoth light trucks - yuck - as consistent with their manliness. Wife just likes the way the i4 drives.

What I found interesting was the difference in EV economy between states. Where I live in Utah, one of the reddest, EV unfriendliest states, has the second best EV vs gas ratio due to cheap electricity and relatively high gas, better than many NE states and CA.

I think it's mostly an accidental byproduct of everyone being upset if electricity costs rise. If they could somehow target just EVs, I have no doubt they would. Kind of like they are with taxes.

^lol all this time I thought you're in Clovis California ha ha

My WA state comparison on that is staggering: $3.28 to $21.17 due to us now regularly having gas more expensive than even California and oodles of hydro keeping electricity even cheaper.
