Hello everyone,

incredibly happy to have picked up my Sunset Orange edrive35, this week. Haven’t done many kilometers yet, but the car feels great so far.

Hadn‘t seen an orange one in real life when ordering, but the pictures here were very helpful when picking the color. Spent some time obsessively scouring the Internet for every single picture and video of an orange i4 I could find :D. And now it’s finally here (although the wait was comparatively short, for the „little one“). Can‘t wait to take it on a longer trip. This is my second EV, after the also excellent Polestar 2 (and also some time with a Mini SE).

Thats lovely. How did you find the i4 compared to the Polestar2? I'm just about to pull the trigger on placing an order and these two are neck and neck:

Polestar 2 2024 model, single motor (RWD) long range with Plus pack (sunroof, heat pump, etc)
BMW i4 edrive 40, M sport

I've driven the old (fwd and dual motor) Polestar 2 and liked it a lot, not had a go in the i4 yet but I did sit in one at the local dealership today.

Beautiful! Had a Sunset 2 Series for a couple of years. Definitely a color you want to look back at as you step away. Enjoy! 😎

Congratulations, what a beauty! I didn't even consider it as the dealer didn't have any cars in that color and the simulated color in the configurator wasn't appealing. Seeing yours and the others here on this site... wow!

That is a color I may consider in the future. Well done!

Thanks everyone! Couldn‘t be happier.

I had the old dual motor P2. I have barely driven 100km in the i4, so it will take some time to properly compare the two, but here are some early impressions:
  • Obviously that particular P2 was a more powerful car than this i4, but the power of the edrive35 is „enough“, for me.
  • The ride in the i4 is much more comfortable, compared to the P2. I didn‘t mind the firm P2 (even without the Performance Pack), but the feel is definitely more refined and luxurious in the i4, quieter as well. Haven‘t been on the right roads yet, to see if the handling qualities of the i4 outshine the P2 (which felt very competent), but I would expect that.
  • The i4 is slightly ahead in interior quality. The Polestar 2 is built like a tank, but the more detailed „classic luxury“ interior of the i4 is overall more enjoyable, I would say. The Polestar is a bit boring, inside. Subjective, of course.
  • The infotainment and UX is a bit of a mixed bag in current BMWs, I think (I already had a lot of time with iDrive 8 in a rented iX). There are lots of options to play around with, but a lot of stuff is rather convoluted. Parts of the UI look very outdated (app screen, in particular). The Polestar had a much cleaner aesthetic (which I prefer), but at the same time fewer options to customize the experience. When I saw pictures and videos of iDrive 8, I thought it was horrible, design-wise, but actually using it, I found it tolerable - just. There is just so much legacy „cruft“ in the BMW system. At least it‘s not MBUX… Still, even without the iDrive controller, for me the Polestar UX was much less distracting and easier to use without taking attention off the road, compared to the BMW. That is surprising to me, given that’s an area where legacy automotive should shine. But, on the other hand, the Polestar-System was also quite bare-bones, in many respects. Same story on the phone: The iPhone App of the Polestar was also much cleaner, but lacked a lot of the functionality of the BMW app. Also, no HUD in the P2.
  • Driver assistance in the BMW is much better. Best system I’ve tried, in any car (mostly based on my experience with the iX). The Polestar doesn‘t come close - not that it‘s unreliable (except for speed limit recognition, which it was horrible at, but which did not feed into the assistance, anyways) it simply doesn‘t offer the same features as DAPP.
  • The slight additional length of the i4 feels noticeable, particularly in narrow parking garages. But I had driven a Mini SE for a while between the two cars, so that might have skewed my impressions and I might just be getting used to a bigger car again. The camera system is more sophisticated in the i4, but the vertical screen actually made the Birds Eye view more informative, in the P2 - but maybe that’s also a matter of getting used to the dimensions of the new car.
  • Exterior design is of course totally subjective: I like them both for totally different reasons. The P2 is clean, technical and more understated, the i4 has an elegant overall shape, but also the typical BMW aggressiveness - so I leaned into that with the louder color, compared to the white P2.
  • Range is a different ballgame with the new MY24 P2. The first-gen was very inefficient, but the range was still ok, for my needs. I expect the edrive35 to match what I got out of the original DM P2 in the real world - if it‘s a bit better that‘s great.

In the end, both great cars, really - similar packaging, but still with some big differences in design choices.

That's a great color, congratulations on the car!

I agree the P2 had a sort of "cleaner" user interface, but I don't want to drive a computer, I want to drive a car! I think the physical layout of the i4's screen that wraps around the driver, and keeps the eyes focused at a certain vertical level, more than makes up for any UX convolutedness. And I love the controller next to the shifter, so I don't have to touch the screen!

I let my 7yo daughter choose the colour of mine. Of course she went for the boldest colour which was SO. But I'm really not mad about it. Its a great colour.

Congratulations! Your pictures exemplify why the passenger side charging port is the most obvious location. Really hoping that all the manufacturers switching to NACS in North America don't adopt Tesla's charging port location. We have some street side chargers near where I live, and the Teslas have to either park the wrong way, or have the cable go over their car to reach the port 🤦‍♂️

@HIN I love your detailed comparison with the P2. Could you please do something similar for DAPP in the iX vs. i4 once you've had time to test it? I'm curious what the differences are with SP18 vs. SP21 in regular use. Thank you!

Thank you!

Agreed about the charging port: Like Tesla, the Polestar also had the charging port on the driver‘s side, which made me get a longer Type 2 cable to be able to reach chargers like this.

Might make the P2 better for the U.K. though (I assume, the charging port location doesn‘t change.)

Will report on how DAPP compares to the iX.

Edit: After all of these discussions, I had to take a few pictures next to this random P2 I came across today:

And also the interior:

It's beautiful! So weird how in some photos, I can't tell the difference between Aventurin Red and Sunset Orange, and in other photos, it's super obvious. Sunset is definitely a color that plays nicely with sun and shade. Congrats, and welcome!

I really like those wheels! Wish they were the winter set in the US!

I can’t believe people still think that the charging port should ever be on the driver’s side when we have pictures like yours. I always see Teslas and others parked the wrong way or with the cord dangling all over the place to reach the driver’s side when street charging.
