Waze/google maps, android auto and HUD/instrument cluster

So I prefer waze or google maps for my navigation and do that through Android Auto. I thought I saw arrows in my HUD once, using those navigation systems. But now it seems I don’t have that anymore? I want to be able to get navigation instructions through my HUD and instrument cluster.

Using Android 14 on Pixel 8 Pro and, as far as I know, iDrive 8.0.

I've noticed this recently. I always use Waze but I don't make many journeys where I use it so my experience is limited. It has definitely worked in the past but I noticed recently that it had stopped. Then it was back again, then gone, etc.

I've been using it more the last week and I have noticed that if I set the route up on the phone in the house before I connect to AA, it has always worked. Routes setup while in the car and connected to AA seem to not display on the console and HUD. However,I would have to test more to see if that was always the case. It may be a workaround though until the issue is properly resolved.

Interesting, thanks. I'll check that too, to add to the dataset.

Tested it again today. Outbound journey setup in the house, working as expected. Return journey setup in car, no HUD and, most oddly, street names in the console but no directions. Not seen this one before!

so, if I set up on my phone, I get HUD instructions. For now. But how do I get instrument-cluster instructions/maps?

I get the instrument cluster / console directions too. You have changed that to the correct display to show navigation?

I'll triple check on my next trip in half an hour. Is the console the same as the instrument cluster? As in, the stuff behind my steering wheel? (just getting a language barrier out the way)

Android Auto Google Maps shows both on HUD and central instrument cluster map view.

Android Auto Waze does not. In my case there is a 'workaround': start navigation via BMW first (which shows up on HUD and central instrument cluster), then start Waze.

Directions in HUD will continue to work with Waze 😎 (central instrument cluster MAP unfortunately not).

Android Auto Waze does not.
Have you read what has been posted? You can get it to work fine, if you start the navigation before connecting to the car.

I use Google Maps, never used Waze.

My experience so for (only driven then car 400Kms).

I always used the start of the journey from the car, and it always showed on the instrument cluster and HUD. However, once, AA reset on its own, and it wouldn’t show anywhere. Then, after stopping for a few minutes and got the car to stand-by state and then back again to drive-ready state it worked.

Previously last month I had hired an iX M40, and I had noticed that if my phone’s battery is low, it doesn’t show, neither on the instrument cluster nor on HUD. But at the moment, even with low battery it shows, except this one time.

I looked to see if there was any way of reporting this but couldn't find anything satisfactory. There is a community forum but mostly looks like a place to vent without any official support. The 'Report an issue' part of the app, doesn't have a topic to cover this sort of issue.

Resurrecting this thread. Is it possible to get the Google Maps map to show on the HUD? When I navigate with GM, the map shows on the instrument cluster but the HUD only shows arrow directions. BMW native navigation shows the map on both places.

No.

Resurrecting this thread (again)... why won't Waze and/or Google Maps show up on the HUD and instrument cluster view? Is it a developer thing? If so, you'd think more people would suggest a software update... :(

The native navigation gives the best experience in HUD with 3D animated signaling. Apple Maps via Apple car play does something in the hud but very minimalistic and Google maps does absolutely nothing neither in the instrument cluster nor HUD. Using software version 11/2024.37 on OS8.0.

Waze gives you turn directions in the hud and the instrument cluster.

I've never quite got the obsession with the display in the instrument cluster. You still have to look away from the road and the screen display is so much bigger and better.

I have instrument cluster directions turned off, however, if you don’t have HUD, especially in one of the comfort mode view, it looks beautiful.

BMW did a great job with the i4 HUD, one of the best features of the car. Too bad you don’t get to experience it fully in Waze and Google Maps.

Hi…new owner here…
I do not see any kind of navigation information on HUD when using google maps on carplay. I’ll try the workarond given earlier to set the destination on the phone before getting into the vehicle - is that issue still open or has that been resolved in software updates?

Also, I fail to understand what does this default view is showing? Especially those wings kind of shape on the top…🤔

It shows how cool you are for driving an i4.

But yes I wonder about that view too, as well as the "floating diamond" view. 😯

Not a lot of options, unfortunately (especially with iOS). Have you seen anything else that works?
