Just out of curiosity - do you think it’d be possible to connect a music player to the USB-A port and use that?
No.

Oh. You want an explanation! I doubt it will present the files in the format required but there should be no danger in trying it if you have one.

If @ssh suggests you buy one to try it out...

since the beginning one usb output/input on the MGU, its more the missing(?) USB hub... that part of chip shortage, Tesla has only one data usb outlet left too.

no 4 plus cable won't work

There is no hub - the MGU supports two data USB ports directly: one port is only data, the other is data and power.

Is there power in the USB Type A in your 2022?

Im pretty sure about the usb hub. All the G20, G30... got it.

Looks like this (active USB hub):

Black plug USB hub to black plug USB c data outlet

White plug USB hub to white plug USB A data outlet)

Blue plug USB hub to blue MGU plug

Well, I might give it a go. I’ve got an A&K that doesn’t get used anything like enough these days, so I’ll try it out.

Don’t worry, I don’t listen to a word @ssh says. 🤣

It sucks there are variations on the functionality of this port. My F32 had data access to all its ports, so I assumed that it would be carried forward in current generation BMW models. My particular i4 has a fully functional USB-C data port in the armrest, where I have a USB-C native 256GB Samsung FAT32 stick always attached.

The F32 had three data/power USB ports - two via a hub and one directly to the OEM HU. There is no hub in the i4 OEM HU.

Is there power in the Type A USB in your car?

On i4's where the USB-C has data and power, the USB-A has data and power as well.

I love my new M50!
However when it comes to USB memory-sticks, it looks like the car is a bit picky?

For playing HQ music files, I have tried a variety of Type-A memory-sticks ranging from 4GB to 64GB, freshly partitioned and FAT32 formatted on a Win 11 PC.
They all work fine on a PC, but only 2 of 6 sticks is recognized by the car. I also tried a brand new Sandisk Dual USB-A/USB-C (32GB/FAT32) memory-stick and it was recognized in the Type-A cupholder area port, but not in the USB-C port in the armrest compartment.

I have talked to the dealer and they had no definite answer.

Does anybody know if a list of confirmed working USB memory sticks for the i4 exist, preferably for the USB-C port?

EDIT: I also tried connecting the Type-A sticks to the armrest area Type-C port using an original BMW Lifestyle USB-C to USB-A adapter, but none of them was recognized. Not even the 2 which works fine on the Type-A port.
i can only give you an answer on the usb ports one in the armrest usb c and one in the central console. both are fit for data exfat and fat32. i tried them with map update data and bot works. i didn’t try the backseats usb c for this purpose. i use 256 GB usb c from samsung and a 64GB for usb a from sundisc…

it appears that for 2023 production all of the usb-c ports are power only and don’t support data. Rather unfortunate

Who ever made that decision must have had no choice because the data hubs are maybe a few dollars cost, at most. Very unfortunate and a poor user experience as a consequence.

The i4 OEM HU supports two data USB - for MY2023 one port has been disabled by not including the OEM HU HSD cable to the center console Type C port:

OEM HU: A402*3B and A402*7B USB data ports

Given this, is there a retrofit?

A519 Type C (Power and no data) may be replaced with (84108711939) A519 Type C (Power and Data), and (61115A11C46) HSD cable run from MGU A402*3B to A519*1B:

I take back my comment about the cost of the port being a few dollars, I should've have known it was going to be typical BMW overbuilt.

Parts plus time required to retrofit is maybe a few hundred dollars, me thinks.
