Let's talk about tires.

What tires do have have on your i4? What has your experience been?

i4 model
Tire miles
Tire noise
Tire performance
Tire wear
Additional thoughts

i4 model: i4 M50 19”
1st set
Tires: Hankook Ventus S1 EVO3 (Front: 245/40 R19 Rear: 255/40 R19) Summer Tires BMW Star OEM
Tire miles: 16,300 (replaced)
Tire noise: low noise, soft ride
Tire performance: excellent, exceeding BMW specs, excellent grip
Tire wear: rears got replaced at <2/32”, fronts at 3-4/32”. Positive camber on the fronts (exterior edges wear first), negative camber on the rears (interior edges wear first).
Average Long trip Efficiency (80mph cruising): 3.7 miles/kWh
Additional thoughts: These are soft summer tires that are excellent for spirited driving and offer very good handling in wet conditions.

2nd set
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (Front: 245/40 R19 Rear: 255/40 R19) Summer Tires BMW Star OEM
Tire miles: 16,800 (replaced)
Tire noise: low noise, similar if not less than Hankooks, soft comfortable ride
Tire performance: excellent grip, better at cornering than Hankooks
Tire wear: rears were down to the belt on the inside, 2/32" on the outside, fronts still had 3-4/32" but one was cut (road hazard)
Average Long trip Efficiency (80mph cruising): 3.7 miles/kWh (summer)
Additional thoughts: I chose these tires over the “improved” 4S version mainly because they are BMW Star certified and come with road hazard warranty if bought and installed at the dealer. Second reason was 12.5% better (less) rolling resistance on the 4 vs 4S which means “slightly” better range. I love spirited driving and taking corners fast so All Season tires are a non starter, regardless of much better thread life.

3rd set (half 4th set)
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (Front: 245/40 R19 Rear: 255/40 R19) Summer Tires BMW Star OEM
Tire miles: 15,200 (current set)
Tire details: same as 2nd set. I replaced the rears at 3/32” at 15,200 miles, the fronts still have 6/32” of thread (new is 8/32”) so likely next replacement will be all 4. To be clear, I am still on my 3rd set of fronts and I’m on the 4th set of rears.

I recently replaced my Hankook Ventus S1s at 15,900 miles. Probably had another 1,500 miles on them but I hit something on the road that destroyed my front right (and bent the wheel as well) so was a bit early with replacements.

I've always run Pilot Sport 4s's on my M5 so that was what I had planned to switch to since the car was new. I've tried a few others but nothing compared to the cornering of the PSS 4s's and the change on my if M50 was noticeable when I switched out the Hankooks.

I only wish I read @cruzer666 s post below relating to rolling resistance beforehand because I can attest that the 4s's decimated my range. I averaged 3.4mi/kWh on my commute in moderate traffic and that plummeted to 2.7mi/kWh. I always drive fast and generally accelerate pretty hard so that 3.4 could have been better had I been a little gentler right foot. When I really tried to improve it on the PSS 4s's and drive as if I had my mom in the car with me, the best I could get was 2.9 - 3.0. Eco-pro mode didn't really impact the mileage.

I love spirited driving and taking corners fast so All Season tires are a non starter, regardless of much better thread life.

i4 model: M50 20" - Pirelli Zero Elect A/S? (I think they are but maybe they are not, given the wear)
Tire miles: 98xx
Tire noise: Quiet
Tire performance: Excellent off the line and cornering
Tire wear: Poor

Additional thoughts: A/S tires I've had in the past typically last 20-25k miles -- these stock tires don't seem to be anywhere near the durability I've come to expect so will be switching makes soon.

When discussing tire wear, it's useful to know the treadwear rating. Although it is not really an "absoute" number, it does give you an idea of how one tire compares to another.

Here are the treadwear ratings for the OEM tires.
Hankook Venus Summer: 200
Pirelli P-Zero Summer: 280
Goodyear All Seasons: 400
Pirelli All Seasons: 500

My Pirelli P-Zeros have 16,000 miles and the rears are at about 6/32nds tread depth. They are at the point where they are a little scary in heavy rain and absolutely dangerous on light snow.

Very quiet, though. No scalloping or uneven treadblock wear. Super grippy.

My car is w40 msport

my summer tires are

Michelin Pilot Sport 4
245/40 R19 98Y Front
255/40 R19 100Y Rear
About 3500 miles
Very quiet
I haven't gotten them to slip yet; on a winding road they hold enough g's to scare me. I once stopped from 120 mph to zero in just a few seconds.
No noticeable wear. I haven't measured, but the tread looks deep.

Okay, I don't drive fast enough to wear them out. I also use DSC

For winter tires I have

Goodyear Ultragrip Performance +
245/45 R18 100H all around
Only about 500 miles as I was gone most of the winter
Very quiet
I tried to slip on a wet road by flooring it from a stop light but no slip.
No wear yet. I will spend this winter driving the car and will work on getting some miles on.

I use DSC all the time, but the tire must be doing something.

My car is a i4 e40 M Sport Pro with almost 8 months and 11500km.

The original Tyres: Hankook Ventus S1 EVO3 Summer Tires BMW Star OEM
Front: 245/40 R19
Rear: 255/40 R19
Came with 2.4 bar on Front and 2.7 bar on Rear and after few days that I pick up the car I went to the Tyre WorkShop that I always go since a long time ago, and I was advised to up the pressure on tyres to 2.9 bar on Front and 3.0 bar on rear in Cold. And I felt much better after this, because I felt the tyres before was to low pressure. And I felt that with this new high pressure the tyres will long much more.

Present: all weeks I take a look on visual tyres and until now seems to me they are wear very equal in terms of outside and inside of the tyre. So constant wear until now.

Thoughts and Forecast: Theses hankooks are a very soft tyre but a good tyre, in terms of handling, noise, even with wet track. In terms of range/rolling seems to me a good one. But like I said they are a very soft tyre so I don’t expect they last long, but maybe until 25000km +-, that’s my thoughts.

For 2nd Set: maybe I’ll try the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Summer Tyre Star OEM.

Regards to all.

i4 eDrive40

about 800 on the stock 19" Hankook Ventus EVO, about 4200 on aftermarket Vredestein QuatracPro's.

Hankooks were probably quieter, but I had a hole in my driver's door virtually the entire time they were on the car, so hard to say.

I do believe that I got slightly better range on the Hankooks, but not by a huge amount.

I have barely 5k miles split between two sets of tires, and drive rather sedately. If I have significant tire wear, there's a real problem.

The Vredesteins just seemed softer when I first put them on, but that just may be the slightly lower load rating and slightly lower design pressure, or a hearty dose of overthinking the issue.

18” Wheels - Bridgestone Turanza T005 BMW Star Rated Summer Tires 225/50 R18 99W XL

17,007 miles exactly on my first set.

These tires are nice and quiet.

These are the best factory tires I’ve ever had on a new car so I’m fine with sticking with the BMW Star tires. They are well suited for a sports sedan and perform well in the rain.

At 17,000 miles I was at the wear bars in the rear. While I still had a lot of wear left in the center front tires before the wear bars, my front tires were showing wear on the outsides from having fun in the corners/curves so I replaced all my tires at once.

This tire was no longer listed on the BMW tire website for the i4 with 18” wheels only the winter tires. I called the local tire store and they told me that Bridgestone only had about 175 left in stock nationwide. I called my BMW dealership and they still had some they could get from their BMW inventory so I was relieved and had them do the work and alignment. I also used this as an opportunity to add on the wheel locks that my car didn’t come with from the factory and get new wipers for the upcoming heavy La Niña or El Niño rainy season we’re going to get.

*Note Bridgestone now has a new Turanza EV specific tire on their website. Not in the 225/50 R18 99W XL size yet , but I imagine the tire shortage is because BMW is switching to a new star rated 18” tire better suited for EVs.
I also thought it was funny that my car had 007 in the mileage at 17,007 at the dealership as the Pierce Brosnan James Bond Goldeneye Film with the Z3 Roadster is what got me interested in BMW as a boy in the first place.

eDrive 40 delivered August 2022 with base Turanza T005 225/50R18 summer tires. No complaints.

Last winter here in Wisconsin I ran with a set of 796M M-sport wheels with Pirelli SottoZero‘s. These were leftover from my M340i, so they already had three winters’ and perhaps 15k miles of wear on them. They still worked reasonably well last winter, but the rears were about shot by spring.

My i4 now has 20k miles and the T005’s too are fairly worn and starting to get noisy. And I picked up a nail in one 2 months ago. That’s been patched by a local tire shop and is fine, but I’m not a fan of running on plugs & patches indefinitely.

Rather than new winters now AND new summers next spring, I decided to replace the T005’s with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4’s (same 225/50R18 as stock). Installed last week and have put a couple hundred miles on them. Excellent in all ways over the T005’s except for efficiency. I’m seeing about a 5% hit to range, which isn’t unexpected but I need to take a longer road trip to confirm. They are as quiet and comfortable as the T005’s were when new, but noticeably sharper handling. I’m very impressed so far. We’ll see how they do in the cold/snow, but I usually just drive our AWD X3 when it’s looking nasty anyway. :)

Anyone need a used, but good-shape set of 796M’s? ;)

i4 edrive40, 225/50 R18's all around, with about 12,500 miles on it, since Feb. '23
  • summers (OEM): Bridgestone Turanza T005 (about 8,000 miles on them)
  • winters: Continential WinterContact TS860S (about 4,000 miles)
I'm happy with the performance of both sets.
But when I got my winter set put on again just now, I was flabbergasted to learn that my summer tires after only 8k miles are mostly worn through and have maybe only "a few months" of wear left on them. The service manager says "if you launch a lot, these heavy EVs will wear through tires quickly". But mine is not an M50 and I'm a pretty tame driver (most of the time ), mostly Eco-pro or Comfort mode. Although apparently my winter set is still in excellent condition...

I4 e35 stock summer Bridgestone Turanza 225/50r18
May-Dec 2023
29000km
4/32 for all 4. We rotated it once when it was 12k.
My tire shop said as I only use that for summer, just use it till it becomes noisy. He said I could put another 8-10k as it lasted me that far. He said he was impressed as it was known to be worn out sooner.

Dec 2033- present
X-ice
4k
8/32rear 9/32 front.

We do at least 1k weekly.. hope this will last us 2 winters. Guess I need to replace the stock mid-next summer.

Hankook Ventus on 18s, edrive 40. At 25k miles, rear were at 3mm, front about 6mm. I changed the rear only because they started aquaplaning. Now at 33k miles, front are still at 5 mm. I think I ll need to change all at about 50k miles. Hankook have an EV specific tyre out called Ion or similar, some initial rave reviews.

2022 ed40 RWD w/ base Bridgestone Turanza T005 (225/50/R18).

Rears were about done by 20k, I wanted to get away from seasonal wheel swaps, and my winters were worn-out too. So I replaced the T005's with 225/50/R18 Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4's based on past experiences with Michelin's. The PSA4's are better in every way except efficiency. Quiet, comfortable, great handling, great in cold and fine in light snow (which is all I need). But I was averaging 3.8mi/kWh over 20k miles with the T005's. I've had the PSAS4's for 6K miles now, and average efficiency is 3.3mi/kWh. Same drives & commutes. It hasn't been improving as temperatures warm and the tires wear.

So a cautious recommendation for the PSAS4's. Good tires, but you will lose range if you're coming from the base 18" T005's. With 2 years of battery degradation plus the tires, my 300+ miles-when-new i4 now tops out at about 250 miles. That has been disappointing, but not enough to trash the PSAS4's early and go back to T005s. Live and learn!

i4 m40 rear wheel drive, OEM 19" Goodyear Eagle Sport. first rear tire failed around 18,000. massive inside edge wear down to the metal cords then a blow out and instantly flat. first thought is out of alignment, took it in, not bad, perfect new alignment, then 2k miles later the other rear tire blows in the same manner, stranded both time. NOT an alignment issue .
BMW dealer said I should be more careful and monitor the tire wear better. BMW North America said nothing they can do, dealer issue.
i4 m40 is 25% heavier than similar 4 series and yet they use the same tires. 900 lbs added weight, added torque, the added heat from the weight and torque.
this wear is super hard spot and seems to accelerate very quickly at the end. see pics from both tires.
not happy with BMW. I had this issue with all three of my i3s, but at least it was even wear and could be seen. I asked my dealer prior to ordering about rear tire wear, was told it was normal, nothing special and used standard tires, not special EV tires.
to me this is a BMW issue, either bad OEM tire choice, bad batch of tires from Goodyear or bad design (camber/toe in) set up.

2023 i4 M50
Pirelli P Zero Front: 255/35R20 XL Rear: 285/30ZR20 XL Summers
Tire miles : 6500
Tire noise : Low
Tire performance :
Tire wear: Front 6mm Rear 2mm
Additional thoughts:
Went to the dealer the other day and they wanted me to replace my rears. I thought that was crazy. I've barely run the summers since I switch them with Winter during the change of seasons. It got me wonder with such low miles why the tread is wearing so bad. I am not blasting off the line and really not going crazy on them. In fact most of my aggressive driving was with the winters.

When I have been doing is running Sport setting most of the time because I like the stiffer steering. Which had me wondering if the immediate power is causing more wear instead of the more effort to go with comfort or eco. From this post it doesn't look totally related to Summer tires.

Interesting that All Season tyres seem so very popular in US. Here in France I have been advised to not even think about it, due to the hot summers, where the rubber would soften too much with all seasons. That would result in worse brake performance and higher tyre wear. In Sweden some testers have determined that they are directly dangerous there and authorities have advised against using them. One test a knowledge they were a compromise, with the worst handling compared to summer tyres and the worst handling compared to winters. And the tests are not linked to or done by any tyre manufacturer. Of course the All Seasons performed better that summer tyres in winter condition.

Volvo tried to launch their new

My car i4 e35 was delivered with Hankook tyres 18inch, and so far I have found them very good. No idea on how long they will last, but I am hopeful.

Here is a link to a tyre test for EV cars. Not necessarily all tyres are EV specific, but a mixture.

The most interesting part is that the specific Michelin tyre for EV performed way worse than the normal Sport 4 SUV tyre. Michelin did not even suggest to include that tyre in the EV test and sent the standard SUV tyre instead.

Hankook tyres performed quite well in the test I think, so looking forward to using them
