However even with the cover out it doesn’t seem to add much height inside. I would go for a suv or a touring for a dog and skip this. I a dog would struggle to say up and get too much sunlight while being there - ie difficult to find a shade spot.

Has anyone seen mention of a dog guard yet or a fitted rubber/heavy duty trunk liner?

An alternative could be to install dog box on the trailer hook.

Seems comfortable for the dog, I personally would be constantly worried about someone driving into it. Inside of the car will be safer.
