Mod note: BMW have acknowledged this as as issue and a fix is due May/June 2023.

I've been having an issue with the CarPlay Maps issue since I've had my i4. When using Google Maps/Apple Maps through CarPlay, after some amount of time the GPS location becomes inaccurate, showing my location around 100 feet from where I actually am. The longer I am using the navigation the further off the GPS location is. It appears to lose location when I drive under overpasses or near obstacles that may cause the car to temporarily lose GPS signal.

The problem persists even after restarting the car. It is only fixed once I reboot my phone and/or reset iDrive by holding the power button for 70 seconds. I don't think its an issue with my iPhone because I have tried multiple phones and all of them have the same issue.

I looked up the problem and other people have the same issue with different cars. Apparently, the iPhone uses the car's GPS when connected to CarPlay. The car is sending bad location info. People were only able to get it fixed after getting a new headunit in their car or updating their firmware.

Here is an Apple forums post describing the issue: Everything works in Apple CarPlay except … - Apple Community

Does anyone else have this issue with their i4?

*I have the latest update - 03/2023.53 and have not had the bug since. Been running it for a couple weeks.

Yesterday I experienced the CarPlay drifting from the route for the first time since the OTA update to 07/2023.53. With the most recent OTA update my CarPlay maps performance has been significantly better than it had been, but having to hard reboot the system yesterday it is still not perfect.

#972 ·
Did you reboot iDrive or the phone? I've seen this happen with my phones especially in cities where GPS reception is more challenging. A phone reboot has fixed it for me in the past. Ironically, I had a weird GPD reception error on my Watch yesterday even though I was under open sky at Copper.

Glad to hear. Gives me hope that it will be fixed one day for me too... They refuse to update me from 07/2023.53 (which is the latest for my car; says the dealer), but I'm sure it's just their lack of knowledge - as they probably don't investigate the problem and check with BMW if theres a newer version not on OTA. I keep pushing them to find a solution, but things sure ain't easy :p.

This is such a weird one. Many forum members reported the issue was cleared up with the OTA update last spring... my June production car had that software and I had the navigation issues big time.

The recent OTA software update appears to have fixed my issue as I have had no issues since. Based on past performance I should have experienced navigation issues about ten times by now and thankfully have had none.

So far with OTA 07/2023.53 about ten trips in and my CarPlay maps issues have been trouble free... of course posting this is tempting fate, but fingers crossed for my car at least it may have solved the issue.

I booked a service appointment last week and had them perform the software update to resolve this. The SA was familiar with the issue, he said it happened in his M3 also.

The update was done 5 days ago and I haven’t seen the issue since. Will update here if it comes back.

Side-note: I mentioned that I had hoped to get the update OTA, but the SA said that additional coding would be needed to fix it even if I’d received the OTA update.

Which version did you get installed? I had the car at the dealer, but their skill level was obviously low and all I got was «you have the latest». So I had to contact BMW directly and they are filling out a technical form.

Really start to loose my patience, as no one seems to know anything about this at the dealers :/.

Very interesting this issue, as nothing seems to work and there is no real answer from BMW. I’m leaving the car at the dealer next week for a «master technician» to have a look, but I’m not sure they will be able to fix anything (maybe try a newer update). The weird thing is that not everyone have this issue (even cars produced in the same period).

Even the car position in the app is totally off grid, so it’s not just a problem with Apple. It happens in MyBMW app, Carplay and Android Auto. Just the built in Maps are working fine…

#956 ·
I think it’s expected that your issue won’t be fixed until at least the 07 update. Might as well schedule it to go in for service.
I was updated to 07/2023.53 a few weeks ago. I saw the issue again for the first time last night.
I spoke to my local genius and was told they still don't have a fix. They said that Apple had to make some software patches before BMW could.

At least rebooting the system sorts it out... a pain, but not a fatal flaw.

#954 ·
I’ve had this issue for months now, updated to 07/2023.53 and the problem is still there. All third party maps shows the car way off road. Dealer will check it next week, so hoping for an answer.

Anybody else have issues still?
I am still on 03/2023.53 and still have the issue. Yesterday when it popped up, I did the triple iDrive8 reboot and that cleared it up for that trip and it hasn't come back yet... but it will.

I was updated to 07/2023.53 a few weeks ago. I saw the issue again for the first time last night. It wasn't as bad as it thought I was 1-2 blocks off of I5 and eventually figured out I was actually on I5 still but...yeah.

Combine this with CONSTANT audio skipping using Carplay right now and I'm planning to tell BMW Seattle to keep the bloody car until they figure out the problem or they just start replacing parts. It goes in next week and I get a loaner.

...and some are 9.

I got updated to 7/2023.35 at the dealer. GPS seems OK for now...but now my Carplay crashes any time I try to use Siri, whether it's from the steering wheel, touchscreen or phone button. All cause Carplay to crash. It reconnects after 5-10 seconds, but the problem happens 100% of the time.

Rebooting iDrive (both single reboot and three in a row reboot) fail to resolve the problem. I've removed/reconnected my phone. I've rebooted my phone. Nothing works.

 I really wanted to lose even more time going back to BMW, paying for Uber to get me around...

I took out a one day subscription to BMW TIS to look up a bulletin that my body shop had referenced in their estimate (yes, I got into a minor fender bender). In scanning the recent bulletins I saw what I believe is the first official service bulletin from BMW on this issue. It was released on September 5th.

It is bulletin SIB 84 04 23, with a whole slew of cars impacted. for the G26 series (i4/4 Series Gran Coupe) it shows cars in production from November 2022 as being impacted, but I know cars made before that were too, so this might be an error. The bulletin says "Intermittently the GPS location in 3rd Party Navigation Apps (i.e., Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze) will drift from the correct location. In addition, the location of the vehicle in the My BMW app may be incorrect. BMW Navigation is not affected."

Sound familiar?

Fortunately, the fix is a software update to 7/2023.35 or later. This is not available for OTA yet, but only at dealers. The bulletin said it should be released to dealers in early August so they should have it or a later version at this point. This is the version @Lyndon S got a few posts back, would be good of him to confirm it is really fixed since it's had it for 2 weeks now.

Sorry, don't you have pdf copy of this Bulletin?

My dealer doesn't want to accept the Carplay issue and refuse to update the car 🤯 I'm on IX50.

I was in BMW Sunday to pick up my plates. Salesperson there (not service) said that the July update was ONLY for Android phones and that holding down the power/volume button for 3 reboot was NOT a hard reset. According to him, the only reset method was holding power for 45 seconds when the car is in standby (eg, powered off). You'll hear relays clicking and such when done correctly.

I need to get the car in for 7/2023.xx to be installed - worst case it is for Android only. Best case, the salesperson was wrong.

#939 ·
It is absolutely amazing to me how sure these people are of things which are simply false.

What they told you is wrong.

The single and triple reboot came from BMW NA, not a dealer. Your salesperson was the opposite of helpful.

#933 ·
yup, as long as your dealer believes/has evidence from BMW that a release will fix an issue, they'll do it as a warranty repair.

I'm a bit surprised that 7/2023.40 was not the version installed, as that is supposed to be latest out (has a fix for the "drivetrain malfunction" issue): Drivetrain malfunction

Did you confirm the version in the iDrive display?

Some 7/2023.xx release should go OTA this month as well (I suspect .40 or later so that the drivetrain fix will get to everyone)

Doesn't help.
Yeah, the last time I had the CarPlay maps freak out I held down the power switch and waited for three black screens. CarPlay came back up and showed my correct location and then drifted off a few minutes later.

This whole thing is really odd. CarPlay maps has been error free for the last several trips, but I am sure it will drift off again.

There have been times when my phone was wonky and a phone reset fixed it, but that's not the primary issue that is discussed in this thread (which was fixed in an iDrive update at least for most cars).

#923 ·
^Do I wait for the screen to flash a black screen three times, or do I press and hold until it flashes, then release followed by two more press and hold until it flashes cycles?

#924 ·
Press and hold until you see it go black three times. Do not release until it goes black the third time.

Remember, everyone: the car communicates location and movement to the phone. This is the issue in all these cases. It seems to "mostly" be fixed in .53, but obviously some still have issues. A hard (3 times) reboot sometimes addresses this for a time, but with earlier revs it did come back.
Can you repost the directions for this procedure?

#922 ·
Simply press and hold the Vol knob until the screen goes black 3 times, then release.

Just had this issue yesterday when I was driving in an unfamiliar area. Tried all map apps on my phone and they all got lost … and then my built-in nav also steered me wrong. It was awful!! If anyone has any workarounds/fixes please share. I have a 2024 50e (x5).
You may have a different issue. My CarPlay maps issue is seemingly random. It works one trip and then not the next sort of thing, but every time it is acting up, I can go to the far less user friendly built-in Nav and it works fine.
