Mod note: BMW have acknowledged this as as issue and a fix is due May/June 2023.

I've been having an issue with the CarPlay Maps issue since I've had my i4. When using Google Maps/Apple Maps through CarPlay, after some amount of time the GPS location becomes inaccurate, showing my location around 100 feet from where I actually am. The longer I am using the navigation the further off the GPS location is. It appears to lose location when I drive under overpasses or near obstacles that may cause the car to temporarily lose GPS signal.

The problem persists even after restarting the car. It is only fixed once I reboot my phone and/or reset iDrive by holding the power button for 70 seconds. I don't think its an issue with my iPhone because I have tried multiple phones and all of them have the same issue.

I looked up the problem and other people have the same issue with different cars. Apparently, the iPhone uses the car's GPS when connected to CarPlay. The car is sending bad location info. People were only able to get it fixed after getting a new headunit in their car or updating their firmware.

Here is an Apple forums post describing the issue: Everything works in Apple CarPlay except … - Apple Community

Does anyone else have this issue with their i4?

*I have the latest update - 03/2023.53 and have not had the bug since. Been running it for a couple weeks.

Well this is super annoying and basically makes navigation useless in my brand new e40. I’m hoping someone has found a fix. I reset my location settings on my iPhone, reset iDrive8, and tried a reboot of my iPhone. Nothing has worked. My phone thinks I’m about a mile south of where I am, while the BMW nav has the correct location. After I disconnect from CarPlay, location is accurate on my phone.

Yes, disconnect -> reconnect carplay worked for me too.
I got hit by this for the second time few days back.
My CA confirmed that the dealership knows about this.
I assume BMW need to fix this in a SW update.
When you say disconnect, reconnect carplay - are you doing that by disconnecting from the bluetooth?

What have you tried to fix it? It's part of the communication protocol between the vehicle and the phone when CarPlay is active, so it's actually the interaction of the two. If your native nav accurate?

No Wireless Charger
On the rf sensor or in my pocket or plugged in for charging, the GPS on the phone is all over the place. Really sucks because I use Waze a lot because of all the warnings about red light cameras, speed cameras, police, accidents, etc! It's nice that the BMW Navi has traffic but I need the rest!

Knock on wood, I have not seen this issue since I initially reported it. The only thing I did was reset my location data in iOS and disconnected from wifi/carplay while in the car, and reconnect. Since then, it seems to have stabilized.

Some more thoughts on this based on experience.
I use BMW/Wayzes/Apple Map directions pretty much all the time when I drive.
Almost all my recent drives have been routine routes where map routing is not needed.
Therefore when this GPS hiccup happened, I knew it right away and ignored the crazy suggestions it tend to give and resorted to resetting carplay by turning wifi off-on cycle.

A week back this happened just when I was relying on alternate routing to avoid a road closure.
It was a bad experience since I was fighting the GPS and was not trusting new directions after carplay cycling.
All done in a rush to get somewhere. The constantly changing GPS directions were creating a dangerous situation.

I hope BMW is hearing about these issues and going to address it soon.

I just got a 2023 BMW I4 E40. Great car BUT, the GPS is totally off. This makes the entire navigation system useless. I have de-installed the digit key from iPhone. Reboot the car by pressing and holding the volume button for 3-5 seconds. Reboot the iPhone. Use Waze and Apple Maps, both gps show I am in a different location. Did anybody bring this problem back to BMW or visit the BMW service center? I have no more ideas on how to fix this problem. Any advice from anybody?

Did you hold down the volume button for 30 seconds? Or 3? You need to do 30 to reset iDrive. I expect that to solve this, since you're seeing it for both navs. If it doesn't, I would call Genius first.

I drive 2023 330ix g20 which has idrive 8.
and I am an iphone owner which uses apple carplay.
had same issues as other people are having.
I updated my iphone ios to 16.2(b) which is beta developer version.
After the update, tt seems like the wrong carplay map app coordinates issue is mostly fixed and negligible.(At least, I don't need to reset idrive or reboot the phone.)
It has been only two days, so I will keep you guys updated if I get the issue back.

My carplay is OK most of the time but the last week it started to wander so much that its unusable because she is always telling me to go back to the route. It's really odd, because it's wandering on roads that I've been on 100 times with no issue, now since last week, or maybe two weeks ago, bang....I'm off-roading, lol. But it's really not funny and it' pisses me off a bit. I"ll reset my i drive and see if that fixes it.

Mine has been good since Thanksgiving break. Updated iOS to 16.1.2 (I think, not the beta) yesterday. It worked last night. Wandered at the beginning of the commute today but got back to usable after 10 minutes. Hmmm.

Same problem here. When my car is parked on my drive, it tells me my home is a minute's drive away. Although in that case, the car's location is accurate - for some reason the BMW system has mucked up the numbering on my road and thinks my house is further up the road than it is!

I think I'll go back to using Waze.

Is anyone experiencing similar problems with the OEM Nav? I assume no, but we should try to isolate issues to let the "crowd sourced scientific method" do its thing.

I have scheduled a service appointment for 12.13 to get my iDrive8 software updated to 11/2022 from 7.2022.33. I noted the CarPlay nav was inaccurate intermittently as the reason for my need for service. I also emailed the Service Manager who I've worked with letting him know about this, that it appears to be a known problem and confirming that the update will be at no charge and can be done while I wait (no need for a loaner). I'll advise any responses before the 13th.

There have been a couple of reports of similar "wandering" from the native nav, but they seem to be much more rare.

Just adding to the data points that I also noticed the problem that y’all are describing yesterday for the first time.

My location marker is off by about several blocks on Apple Maps and in Google Maps via Airplay, and looking at onboard NAVs at the same time the location marker is correct without issues. As soon as I disconnect my phone from my car (by turning on Wifi on my iPhone), the location is accurate again. Carplay navigation is completely unusable as I am missing turns and left wondering where I am.

On an iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 16.1

Apparently I was parked in the middle of the lake! I had to turn the car off for it to let go of carplay so I can have proper GPS on the phone again! Built in Navi was fine though but I need Waze in the city because of all the speed cameras they have installed and all the road closures they have!! The BMW Navi kept on routing me to dead ends.

I just activated CarPlay thinking I can finally stop using the useless built-in map (BMW Hong Kong map is provided by a Chinese provider, and not what you guys are using).. But then I'm hit with the GPS issue like everyone else here... I'm constantly several blocks away from my actual location when using wireless CarPlay and GPS data feeding from the car, this is nothing new and has been around for years, my E39 M5 has the same issue with the aftermarket HU and built-in GPS antenna. Apple could have easily address this by adding an option to choose which GPS signal to use when using wireless CarPlay, but instead, we can't rely on something as simple as basic navigation...

Anyone good with coding and able to look if the MGU has any specific GPS output data format to play around? I wouldn't be surprised if this can be fixed by coding to the proper GPS protocol needed for CarPlay... Just a thought...

Accuracy has been OK w/ Apple Maps in CarPlay recently (w/ spotty wandering) but for some reason my curved screen does not Zoom in. I set the location and still get HUD next actions but the display stays Zoomed out to the full route. It shrinks a bit as it does follow my progress via the arrow so as I approach my destination the map zooms in b/c there is less territory to cover.

Did I do something that I need to change?

NOTE: I use Google Maps on occasion via CarPlay but I don't like that it doesn't appear on the HUD like Apple Maps does.

Touch the middle of the map. The icon in the upper right will change from compass to an arrow. Touch the arrow.

Hey Guys and Gals--I wanted to share my experience with you on the CarPlay issue.

After 13 months of waiting I took delivery of my car the first week of December. Sadly I drove it for 3 days before I was back at the dealer with a long list of items not working, one being CarPlay. I was so disappointed. I had waited so long for this, and I had high expectations. I had owned another BMW previous to this one, and it was old enough that it didn't have many of the safety features that are now standard (lane departure warning, blind spot detection, automatic high beams, etc), not to mention CarPlay of any flavor. Because of the software issues none of these standard safety features were working or worked intermittently on my new i4.

The dealer took 3 days to correct all the problems that I had with the car; all of which were software related. The car was delivered with software version 7/2022.40, and now I have 11/2022.44.

The dealer stated that they had updated the software and also performed recall work. Here's exactly what my work order says:

RECALL: PERFORM OPEN UPDATE / RECALL PER MANUFACTURER
g08 g26 g28 g70 u06 program control units (SME)

No one should be having software issues like this. I had the car less than a week before I brought it back for an update. As I've said I was very disappointed. The car is a great car; but the software is / was not ready. Since receiving the updated software and the recall work being done I have had no CarPlay issues. No GPS issues. Everything is now working as it should have been when the car was delivered to me. I encourage all of you not to lose hope--and get your software updated.

I want to thank the forum members for your posts. This forum has helped me with the waiting and with understanding more about our i4's. And a big 'Hello' to all the other folks in the Denver, Colorado area.

Thanks! What part of the Denver area do you call home, and which dealer did you use for service?

I'll take mine in next Friday for winter wheels/tires and have let them know they'll need to update the software (I'm showing the software update issue on my VIN).
