I bought a new i4 five days ago and while I was initially excited and loved the car, I am having serious regrets. I am a long time Lexus owner and am not using to having problems with cars. The i4 won’t stop beeping when completely off, the remote keys don’t work so I gave up on them but the real problem is it will not charge. Tried two public stations and our home one with no luck. It’s a holiday weekend so I can’t get any help. I would appreciate any advice from seasoned owners and would love someone to help change my mind about my BMW experience. I love how the car drives but I need a car that works properly.

The beeping is most likely having comfort access, then moving in and out of range with the key fob or phone on you.

What do you mean remote keys don't work? Sending a phone command? Unlock on touch with fob in pocket? Sonething else?

The charging issue is a real concern. Check the settings for "charge in set time" vs "charge immediately". The more common complaint is the car "charging before its supposed to".

If the car was delivered at 100%, as it was supposed to be, the charger works. For public charging, was it Level 2 or DC Fast Chargers? What is the home charger you are using? The car does have a ridiculously high number of settings to sort through, which is why it's recommended that people give the manual a full read-through, so you have awareness of some of the things the car might have been set wrong, vs what it can or cannot do.

Thanks for the information. The credit card key and using phone as a key don’t work. Says malfunction on the dashboard. I set it back to factory so now I have to use the fobs and no longer have a profile which is better than having to put my PIN number each time I want to drive.

The beeping is very hard to explain. It happens when the keys are nowhere close to the car and is at regular intervals of every 30 seconds.

I was able to charge after trying three different place but it was so slow that it only went up 3% over a period of an hour and a half. Calling our electrician tomorrow to see about making our at home charger work.

If you are using a Level 1 charger(plugs into a standard 120v outlet), then 3% per hour is expected.

I was using a Chargepoint charger at Kohls. I believe it was level 2 but am not sure.
There's a setting on the car for charging that limits the charge rate. It sometimes default to its minimum level of 6A which would lead to very slow charging.

Sorry to hear your new i4 experience isn't going as planned.
Remote. I would stick with using the key fob for now. Just to get things settled. At some point you can reset the key card and phone and try that again. But the key fob should always work.
Charging. If you have NEMA14-50 plug at home, try using the included BMW charger that came with the car. Just to get used to how it should work. Even without 14-50, you can plug into 120v socket and see if it chargers normally. You should get about 1-1.4kW per hour of charge.
Beeping. Hmmm not sure what this is if it's repetitive every 30 seconds.

Sounds like your dealer did a poor job at delivery in setting up your keys, settings, etc. I’d go back and have someone set everything for you, and investigate that beeping. If the key isn’t close and moving, that’s weird.

Does the beeping sound like the beep when you click on the key fob? Or is it a different sound? You need to first eliminate the key transmitting to the car.

The only other thing I could think of is that it's related to the charger trying to get a handshake with the car. Some chargers have beeps that signal a good connection.

Beeping every 30seconds from the car itself isn't normal.

Others have mentioned this: your dealership did a very poor job of showing you the car. I mean, it's a lot to take in all at once but they should have all of the answers you need.

Strong recommend to 1. make a list of each question and then 2. set up an appointment with your dealership to get your questions answered. It's a premium car, you should be getting premium service.

*this assumes your dealership is relatively accessible. If not...you've got tons of help here.

An update: The charging at home does not work, even on 110. I get an error: Insufficient power grid. I have an electrician coming over tomorrow to help with that but if anybody has any recommendations, please let me know. I set all of the settings back to factory and reprogrammed everything. I think the sales person may have set it up wrong. As of now, my keys are working!! I found out where the beeping was coming from. It was from a dying backup battery on our garage door opener. It just happened to coincide with the purchase of this car.

I am making progress. I do love how the car drives. It is a dream. Now to just figuring out the whole charging thing. Very grateful to have found this community to help me learn about my car.

Typically, the dealer EV Genius is the one who sets up an i4. You had an absolutely terrible experience at your dealer! They should have set up everything, including your key card, your phone's Digital Key (and Watch if you want), charging settings (including showing you how it works!), and understanding the rest of the settings in your car. When I picked up my i4 at the Performance Center, my handoff with the specialist was 2 hours long (and I knew the car pretty well and was coming off iDrive 7 in my 330ix).;

How are your charging settings set? There are a number. Tell us what all of them are.

I have to laugh that the beeping was something else. We have a garage beep from a backup battery for something to do with Comcast and VOIP.

We have never had VOIP and haven't had Comcrap since 2014, but I can't get our providers to remove the damned thing. If I remove the battery, we lose internet, but it doesn't actually matter that the battery is dead.

So, it's been beeping since 2013.

Good to hear you've got an electrician coming. Hopefully they get you sorted.

The beeping could be an extra keyfob inside the car somewhere. Does the car lock? All doors closed properly?

Most of the other issues mentioned are related to the sometimes painful switch from gas to electric, they are not BMW specific. Public charging is quirky and inconsistent, but never touching a gas pump again and always leaving the house “full” is awesome. Hang in there!

As others have said, go back to the dealer and demand a proper orientation - including charging. Dealers also have chargers and can verify the car charging is not defective. (They are supposed to deliver the car to you at 100% which forces them to verify charging works before you leave.)

Is this your first EV? I highly recommend you study the owner's manual. Everything I have wondered about this i4 I was able to find in the manual. I came from a Tesla and I still took time to study the manual and learn how to search it. A lot of your issues are addressed in the manual.

Glad to read you have figured out the constant beeping (garage door) and got your digital key functioning correctly. As for the charging, it sounds like a problem with the EVSE (charger) circuit or your i4 Charging settings - charging mode, departure time, charging target, current limit for AC charging. So we can provide more specific advice, let us know how you have these i4 charging settings set up, what AC charger you are using, what type of circuit the charger is plugged to. Good luck!

Very much agree with this. Gone are the days when you could jump in a car and figure it all out in a couple of minutes. They're very complicated devices these days, and reading the manual really is necessary for safe operation. Some things will NOT work the same way they used to, or across manufacturers and this can come back to bite the driver - hard. I'm thinking specifically of speed control/lane keeping functions, but even HVAC can be difficult to understand.
