Since I am initially downloading the update to my iPhone using the My BMW app, can I just sit in my home and download it using my home WiFi connection? Then go and download it to the i4 by sitting in the car.

That’s what I do 🤷🏼‍♂️

I am trying to connect the wifi on my iPhone to the wifi in the i4. The iPhone shows that it is connected to the Direct BMW XXXXXX but the iPhone says that I have "No Internet Connection"
I figured that the iPhone needs to connect to the internet via my cellular connection. It shows that the MyBMW app is enabled.

I am totally lost!!! What gives?????

Similar experience that I've had with both my BMW's and the WiFi connection to my Android phones. I think you would need to use the phone as a hot spot to gain internet access.

Yes I did exactly that. When transferring from your phone to the car your phone does not need internet connection. Phone and car is connected via BT then WiFi directly. I sat in my car for the phone to car transfer with the car is D/B, only because I figured it's as close to driving without actually driving. I did also disable my data connection after about 5-6 minutes into the transfer and that seemed to make the transfer go quicker.... but that could have been just good timing.

UPDATE. This morning the update has disappeared entirely. No longer in my iPhone app and not in the car. It shows the 2024 update as installed and no new update available. I stand by my original assertion that BMW is a dinosaur in matter of software.
Same experience with me.
I’m away through Thursday but my wife is home and driving our i4 every day.
Perhaps by the time I return on Friday it will somehow reset and allow me another chance.
I vaguely recall a prior i4 update that went smoothly.
But this failure is rather discouraging.

I was scheduled to go to the dealer tomorrow to have the recall update, but over the weekend version 03/2025.71 installed successfully. It says it was to address Recall: Electric Drive Motor Software.

However, when I called the dealer, the technician said he thought it was too big and needed to be installed by them. He said my VIN still shows as needing the recall. I am on the phone with BMW being bounced around for the last 45 minutes between i4 Genius support, recall support, some other unknown department, and now on hold for Genius again (the name seems to be a little ironic). I decided to cancel the service appointment for a week and see if the system updates me as good.

The details of the s/w upgrade says:

Recall: Electric Drive Motor Software
This safety recall addresses the electric drive motor software, which could lead to a shutdown of the high-voltage system.

Based on that, I believe I'm good to go, but wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Update: I finally got to a Genius :) and she was able to confirm that on one of the internal systems it showed no open recalls, but said it may take a few days to update across the other external systems. I went ahead and cancelled my appointment for now and will follow up next week.

I left my phone and keys in the car when it was in the "preparing" stage and it finished. Then I was able to start the install from the i4 screen, where it made me exit and lock the car. That took about 20 minutes and then it notified the BMW all that it was successful.

Well, I finally realized that the remote update was already downloaded to my iPhone. So on a shopping trip this morning, the download was being transferred to the car. It took about 30 minutes of driving to be transferred to the car and setup. Since we were out, I waited until we were home in our garage before starting the install. Took about 20 minutes is worked fine.

But, I am still not clear how to use the WiFi connection from my phone to the car if I need to also connect to the Internet. I was obviously WiFi connected from iPhone to car as the transfer happened.
But, in the future, if I also needed to have the iPhone connected to the Internet when WiFi is connected to the car, can’t I use the Cellular connection for the app? If I want to use another hot spot, I would connect my iPhone’s WiFi to the other hot spot. Thus, disconnecting the iPhone to car .

This is very complex. I consider myself somewhat fluent in iPhone setup. What does the average person do???

What you describe requires the digital eSim option to be selected during ordering, otherwise you can't use the car itself as a Hotspot.

What I am trying to do is connect my iPhone to the Internet while the WiFi connection is between the car and iPhone. I this feasible?

You do not need internet connection once your are connected to your car via BT and Wifi (on the car). Car is using the Wifi connection to transfer the update from your phone to the car. I even disabled my data connection on the phone and the transfer still occurred without any issue. So when you connect to the car to transfer the update package, it's 100% normal to show no internet on your phone.

AFAIK, your phone shouldn't be able to be connected to two wifi networks at once. You have to be connected to the car to send the update to the car, so trying to connect the phone to a separate network will just cause the car's update to stop.

Further update. After disappearing for a few days the prompt to download the software to my car reappeared so we started again
Same stuck preparing at 49% while the iPhone app says it successfully uploaded. This is just amateurish from BMW. Here are the two screens, from the iPhone and in the car at the same time

Note, I've never connected my phone via wifi - just bluetooth/carplay - and it seems like eventually the updates make it over just fine.
If you're using CarPlay, I thought that meant you were also tethered to the car via wifi?
