I don't have an iPhone, so please excuse my ignorance:

Why would one constantly use CarPlay (or Android Car)? I just don't see the advantage. For me the onboard navigation is way better integrated. If you insist to play music from your phone, Bluetooth audio is enough and much less power consuming. Anything else is not something I'd use while driving anyway...
Hmmm... CarPlay uses WiFi, so there may be an advantage for some of the data exchange, and I've preferred Apple Maps myself, but this is an interesting experiment for me to take on during my drive home from the PCD...

i think i’ll be using the BMW navigation as its more tightly integrated with charging requirements, but I’ve heard Apple is adding some of those features (charging stations specifically). I’m sure they’ll have many updates by the time i get my car. :)

Maybe it depends on the phone or app, but if I stream music from my Samsung through Bluetooth, i get very poor controls through the BMW media system. I get previous, play, next and that's it for YouTube music.

If you use android auto, then you can search for a song you want to listen to (by voice), see the queue and skip directly to some other song from it, start up a custom playlist, shuffle the songs, put one on repeat etc. None of that is possible through the native media player, so I have to use android auto so then the wireless charger barely keeps it the battery topped off and doesn't usually overheat.

For Google maps through android auto, I'd have to use the wired charging because the wireless charger overheats. Luckily I find the native BMW navigation to be good enough.

I generally prefer the onboard navigation & media too - cleaner & better integrated, just as you say. But CarPlay-enabled apps can bring meaningful value. For example...
  • Third party maps. Waze is invaluable for realtime accidents, road debris, potholes, and law enforcement intelligence. PlugShare and ABRP on the huge display is also awesome.
  • Satellite Maps. I also find that it's occasionally helpful to see a satellite map which looks fantastic on either Google or Apple Maps.
  • Traffic info on Google Maps is usually more realtime than anywhere else.
  • Podcasts are easier to navigate with the native CarPlay app than id8. Moreso if it has its own app that allows (or is required for) selecting an episode online.
  • Streaming audio. Lots more choices via CarPlay; Pandora, SiriusXM Streaming, etc.

It's good that people have different ways of doing things.

I'm one of the view people on this earth who prefer to own their music, so I don't use YouTube, Spotify or any other subscription models. I just buy the tracks and organize them myself in playlists. Which are, of course, all available in the car on an USB stick and that works just perfectly with the voice control ("My precious, start playlist New Wave Top!")

I could imagine using the audible app for audio books, though. Any maybe my app for podcasts, too (it does support Android Car).

But I'm confident enough with the onboard navigation. So far it has shown me the traffic, accidents, charging points, etc. just perfect. I wouldn't know how to get it any better...

Thanks for all your suggestions, though!

Just got my i4 Friday. Drive about 5 hours today. Wireless charging made my new iPhone 14 pro hot but failed to charge battery much. Not I was using AirPlay and had WAZE going, but a good charger should be able to handle this. I am going to try wired charging next time and complain to my dealer. If I had it to do over, I would skip the wireless charger. Not worth the hassle of dealing with something that does not work - and I am assuming that BMW will come up with some fix at some point.

I doubt it. I think this is a hardware issue that won't be fixable without a redesign.

So do they credit people back for their useless charging pads? I've never experienced a car accessory that failed 100% from the start before that could not be corrected.

I suspect it will taking having it replaced over and over again until they recognize the fundamental design failure and replace it with a better supplier.

But its local BMW that does the repairs, and I assume corporate needs to find new supplier. I wish they'd just a attach an Apple MagSafe (for iPhone users at least) so things just worked. Its $39 retail, versus the $200 I wasted for BMW charger, and it works all the time.

Yes, but corporate pays under warranty, so I’ll make them keep replacing. And I agree about MagSafe.

BMW should fix hardware issue by adding fan under the charging pad. Also using software there is an option to regulate charging power based on phone temp.

Overall, location of the pad is very unfortunate. No way to see what is displaey on the screen, closed area not let heat to go off and removing phone if there are cups in the holder makes this even more useless.

100% agree! I know the old jokes about drinking in the car, but let’s get real!

Spoke to my BMW dealer today. They claim that wireless technology not capable of charging iPhone when its running CarPlay and I should either use USB-C or not use CarPlay. They say I am doing well if I just maintain charge and don't lose power.

Honestly I think that answer is bull and I told them. I will test on my next long drive turning off BMW wireless charger (I assume that is an option) and using MagSafe charger connected to USB-C port.

Bottom line to me is that BMW should not sell an inferior product for a $200 upcharge. I see no advantage of their charger over the MagSafe, especially if it wont properly charge. My son believe Apple intentionally diminishes the power supplied by non-Apple wireless chargers. If true, BMW really should disclose that their product does not work well with iPhones.

...and last night in my G20 on a 1-hour drive, I got the "stopped charging due to high temp" warning--when it was plugged in to a lightening cable! Apple need to fix the CarPlay heat issue.

Suspect the fix requires teamwork between Apple and BMW, which may be asking for too much. The iPhone may or may not have been getting the proper power necessary through the lightening cable. I know that my MagSafe requires the proper plug on the end for fast charge to work. I use an Anker and Apple has one too, but even the original Apple plug for USB-C did not deliver the power necessary. Must be a 20 W plug and not an 18 W plug like Apple originally supplied before the Phone 12 came out. I have no idea what power comes out of the USB-C on my i4. And are you using USB-A or USB--C on your G20?

I do plan to test this in about a week when I do my next long trip in the i4.

It is not only an iphone issue. This a charger plus software issue. Same problem is with Samsung phones.
Slow charging is not delivering enough power to run Android auto. Fast causes overheating. Again no issue with other chargers Audi or MB.

It was plugged into the back seat 3A USB-C ports using the Anker cable. This should not be an issue for charging, but indicates to me how much CarPlay heats the phone (brand new iPhone 14 Pro). That's why I'm working with my Apple contacts to communicate with the CarPlay team (they are not public-facing).
