Just a heads up that since upgrading to 07/2025.38, my head unit has crashed and rebooted while driving twice. However... I was foolish and upgraded my phone the day after upgrading the car, so I don't know for sure which one is triggering it (I'm using Android Auto when the reboots happen). I might have to try going to for a drive with Android Auto disconnected and see what happens.

Buggy update. “Apps” take forever to load. The data privacy consent is minutes to load and doesn’t seem to save settings. Drive recorder button doesn’t work unless you just opened the app. Like they they brought back the news app though. This seems half baked.

Have you tried this right after the update ? If so, give it a drive or two.

I'm convinced the only reason they tell us to drive is because phones sometimes decide to pop back to the home wifi when no internet is found via the car, stopping the transfer.
No it isn't.

It is because when you drive, the car is powered by the main battery. When you aren't driving, it is powered by the 12v battery, which is pretty small in the i4 because it isn't used for much.

BMW don't want the battery dying while the upgrade is being performed because it could corrupt a head unit, so it only happens when the car is powered by the main battery.

Also, when they tell you to drive, the transfer to the car has already been completed, so it is nothing to do with your phone or its wifi connection at that point.

Edit:
The above is completely wrong as its the other way round (as has been pointed out).

The transfer requires the car to be driven, although it continues with the car off as I found on this update and mentioned above. So who knows what the issue is that requires the car to be driven. Maybe you are right @FortyTwo!

Obviously the car has to be parked for the upgrade otherwise something catastrophic might happen when the control units are being programmed and restarted.

When I updated, every time the update wasn't yet transfered from the phone to the car when this message came up. It's says it's necessary to drive to transfer (not to perform) the update, but it's being uploaded anyway.
This isn't a translation thing either, my car is set to German and my phone to English (old habit from the C64 days when all IT devices were English-only), the message is identical in both.

It's all a bit mysterious. I think when the update itself is performed, the 400V battery is activated. But the car cannot be in drive-ready state, obviously.

The explanation with the WiFi that could be dropped makes sense to me.

You don’t HAVE to be driving. I think the message is that the process will occur as you drive the vehicle. IOW, you don’t have to be parked for the upload to the vehicle to happen. You DO have to be parked with the vehicle off for the installation to happen…that’s the final step.

I just want to say that the "dogs dangly bits" is downright poetic. I think I teared up.

I've downloaded it to my phone and in the instructional youtube video I see that now you need to park the car in order for the update to load onto the car. This is different to the last upgrade that required the car to be driven while the update was being installed. If this is real then BMW have finally figured out how every other company does it.
The last update was a total disaster and my car eventually had to spend 72 hours at the dealer because the upload kept on stalling at 49%

The drones were benevolent and shone their OTA rays upon my car today. They popped my OTA cherry.

Ok both of you i4 OTA fanboys please proceed to the nearest EA Electrify America. I think the new software moved the max miles (at 80%, after charging) upwards again!

After this update my Australian car has lost the ability to plan routes with multiple charging stops. 😢

As background, iDrive 8/8.5 cars in our market could never plot such routes, it would simply throw a message saying that the destination can't be reached and would you like to search for a charger nearby. I've moaned about it on this forum more than once... ;-) Anyway, I managed to explain the issue to a Genius, who contacted BMW Australia, who contacted BMW AG, and after a couple of months an "Update Apps and Services" in late July brought me the feature you guys have all had since launch. I was on 3/2025 before that app update. Looks like whatever data value they updated in the configuration was incorrectly baked into the 07/2025 update.

I got a bigger number/miles after EA earlier today!

Be sure the rest of you guys drive slowly, use signals and brakes so that the OTA drone can see you and send you the new software...
