If you’ve ever hand waxed your i4 with paste wax you know how difficult it is to apply wax to the narrow painted strips right above the black plastic skirts on the side without accidentally getting some wax on the plastic.

Usually I try to have a wet microfiber towel to use to take off wax from plastic right away while still applying wax.

However I had some white wax residue left
on the black plastic. I didn’t want to use chemicals like Mother’s Back to Black which would have put a shine on my matte plastic trim and did a google search. JD Power recommended using an eraser. If you take an eraser and gently rub it back and forth the wax comes right off.

I used a German eraser for my German i4 that I picked up at the local Office Depot:

I’ve had pretty good luck with detail spray and a microfiber. If that does not work I apply some of the offending wax to act as a solvent and microfiber while wet. I use Collinate 845 exclusively. Results may vary with other brands.

This is the JD Power Article that I read that mentioned using a normal eraser(among other solutions):
.
And this is an entertaining YouTube video that popped up from my initial google search showing how easy it is:
The guy in the video mentioned that he had used a “Mr. Clean Eraser” in the past and it works as well. I used an eraser that you would use to remove pencil, not a chemical eraser.

How To Remove Wax From Plastic Trim
Dustin Hawley | Feb 16, 2023
Waxing your car is a great way to protect the paint, but it can also get messy. Wax often sticks to your vehicle's plastic and rubber parts, making them look dirty. However, that’s not the only problem.
How To Remove Wax From Plastic Trim

Wax stuck on plastic trims can be incredibly frustrating because you may notice it only after a certain period of time. But If you don’t take care of this problem promptly, wax residue can cause permanent damage to your car’s trim pieces and leave them dull and lifeless.
That’s why this article will provide you with four distinct methods that could effectively solve this problem for you.

Five Methods To Remove The Wax
There are multiple ways to remove the wax from your vehicle. Most of these involve using particular products, like towels, brushes, or wax removers, and require different approaches. However, you would only choose between a couple of those, which will be listed below.
1. Plastic-Safe Cleaner Or Wax Remover
Plastic-safe cleaners are chemicals specially made to remove wax from plastic trims. You can find them at auto shops or even hardware stores that sell car care products. They usually come in spray bottles and will have instructions on how to use them. It’s important not to overuse these cleaners, as they can easily damage plastic if not applied correctly.
The remover works on all types of plastic and will not damage it, which allows you to use it for your interior and exterior cleaning needs, making it more cost-effective than buying two different products.
2. Using A Clay Bar
You can also use a clay bar to remove wax from the plastic trim. These are much gentler on the surface than other products and give results without risking damage to your car's paint or trim.
To use it, rub the clay bar over your car's plastic trim in a back-and-forth motion until you see no more residue on the pad of the clay bar. Afterward, wipe away any remaining residue with water and towel dry. You'll notice that your plastic trim will look shiny and new.
3. Microfiber Towel Or Brush
The microfiber towel is another excellent method to remove wax from plastic trim and is similar to a clay bar. First, lightly lubricate the wax surface with a spray lubricant. Then, gently rub the wax away gradually until it all comes off.
Use a soft micro towel, cloth, or brush gently when cleaning off the wax. If you put in too much force, it will scratch the plastic and leave permanent marks. You should also be careful when using a microfiber towel because it can cause scratches if it’s not soft enough.
Use the brush or cloth to scrub away the remaining wax from your car's trim piece by rubbing it in circular motions until all of it has been removed. Once you finish, try using a microfiber towel to buff over your trim piece, so it looks shiny and new again.
4. Using an Eraser
An eraser is another effective tool to remove wax from the plastic trim. It works its magic on the trim and can easily remove the wax. Simply rub it gently over the wax until it’s all gone. Afterward, you can use a fiber cloth to wipe away the eraser and wax residue. You can use any kind of eraser; a pencil eraser, a magic eraser, or even a white eraser.
5. Protecting The Trim
Even though it doesn’t technically count as a method, it’s essential to be accurate and cautious when dealing with wax. You don’t want to get it all over your trim, and one way to ensure that is to tape off the areas you don’t want to be waxed. You can use a simple painter's tape, which will easily peel off after you finish. Do all this, and there should be minimal or no cleaning involved at all.

Summary
If you are like most people, you've probably waxed your car before. Waxing is a great way to keep your automobile looking new and shiny. However, it's important not to leave any excess wax on the plastic trim of your vehicle, as it can cause damage over time.
To that end, you can use the methods provided in the article and ensure the cleanup process will be easy. Just keep the last one in mind, as it could save you the hassle of cleaning up after a wax job.
