Why does BMW make make things so difficult in Canada ?

I am here in the poor cousin country of Canada, where BMW could care less about me or anyone else in Canada.

Here is my list of complaints :

1.) We are funneled into the dealer for updates on the whereabout of our cars. We cannot call the Genius line or customer service where they actually have information to share. Instead I go to my dealer and they don't know anything either !

2.) I am now being told that I have to sign this ridiculous 5 page legal document regarding Non Exporting my car within the first yr of ownership. if I do sell my call after signing this agreement I am subject to $15,000 plus fine and an 18% interest rate on any outstanding loan. I also cannot purchase my car CASH. I can only put so much down, and the balance is on loan with BMW. This is all " fine print " crap being thrown at me at the last few weeks before my car arrives, A car I ordered in Feb and was built in May22 and just recently got on a ship and now sits in the English channel doing sweet nothing. So now I have to finance my car and spend money on interest charges when I have the cash to purchase it out right.

3.) I get on the BMW USA site looking at accessories, floor mats etc and because I am in Canada I cannot source or have the product sent to me.

4.) So I get on the BMW site in Canada with cash in my hands to spend on high priced BMW items and the accessories are nowhere to be found. Took forever to find a path that took me to a different site and they have nothing to sell me.

Guess I'll just put my money in my pocket, BMW is not interested in it.

I am so dishearten with my first BMW experience. I am scared to death what the service experience will be, after being treated like royalty at Lexus for 7 years.

I still think 2 is crap. I can't imagine it's actually legal for them to force this. I'd be tempted to talk with an attorney at this point. Seriously, this is so broken it's beyond the pale. I'd be tempted to engage governmental oversight if not my own attorney...

Note: this isn't "BMW," per se. It's BMW Canada, who, as you note, seem sub-par at best. Another bit of evidence regarding how lousy the sales model is. I run into this periodically with ski gear (no comparison, I know), when the US distributors and reps are useless or worse. It's especially interesting when two brands sell exactly the same product in different colors with different branding, and the service difference is dramatic.

Again, I'm really sorry to hear about this. I don't take crap like this lying down, though...

Sorry that you are going through this. You mentioned Lexus. Had I not got hold of a canceled order I would have bought a Lexus. Folks keep saying that the i4 is worth the wait. I say BULL CRAP!. The folks here in the US have had their share of misinformation between the Genius and their dealers as well. My next EV will be a Lexus.

I love love love my Lexus experience. Would recommend Lexus in a heart beat, but they are slow to the EV game and although I am being told they will come out with their EV car in 2022 it's already October and no EV car. The other issue I have with Lexus is the lack of options and customization its almost like they have no imagination. That said I would not hesitate to consider an EV car from them.

Regarding #2, I’ve seen this practice in the US too; it’s not from BMW though; it’s the dealer, who wants to get some gravy kick back from BMWFS on the deal. I don’t know about Canada, but in the US you can write a check for the whole amount the next day after you got your car and there are no penalties to pay it off early. Just don’t tell your dealer ahead of time that you will be doing that because they won’t be happy

Sleezy. Simple as that. Disappointed that a brand like BMW would have this level of sleeze.

I'm sorry you've experienced this set of issues. That's got to be frustrating.

Regarding issue #2, that LIE is the reason I walked away from ordering my car at the local dealer who is literally 1.5 miles away from my house. They tried to force me into financing with them by insisting they accepted NO CASH deals due to their desire to prevent me from purchasing a car then turning around to ship it out of the country. That is a crock of flamming đź’©.

Are you unable to contact BMW customer service ? You should be able to find their details (phone & email ) in the My BMW app or on their website . I'd really encourage contacting them with details of what's going on .

Here is what I found on their customer service website :

In my case, I contacted CS here in NJ over the poor performance of my local dealer. They followed up immediately to my satisfaction.

I wound up purchasing from another dealer with no issues.

My frustration is I have waited 10 months for my car and it should be delivered by end of month ....I am worried if I rock the cradle they'll refund me my deposit and sell the car to someone else. Unsure if they can do that. Like I said I have no problems with the non export doc.....I just don't think its right that I have to carry finance charges for 12 months before I pay off the car.....here's my money.....oh we don't want it.

Very surprised about the conditions in #2.

Regarding financing as mentioned you should be able to cancel the loan the next day without penalty.

I was informed about #2 by my CA when I placed the order so at least it seems to be consistent across dealers - unless we happen to have the same dealer! They claim it is to prevent flipping which as we know is common with EVs in high demand.

What I understand from previous conversations is that it was difficult for you to give a cash down (second statement). Too bad. In the province of Quebec, dealers have agreements with certain banks. When signing the contract, we can opt for the bank of our choice. At the moment, interest rates are on the rise and are around 6 to 7% depending on the bank, it's really very high. According to a discussion with a salesman at my dealership, we can give a cash down of the amount of our choice. I was never told of an associated penalty. Obviously, dealers can always use certain legal vagueness to pocket more money, it is to be watched. I agree that it is better to stay on good terms with the dealer and to contact the Consumer Protection Office in case of doubt (available only in Quebec).

I finally spoke with the Finance mgr., and he told me that I cannot buy the car CASH and that I had to carry at minimum a 20K finance loan with them. I then have to pay a monthly payment for 12 months and then in month 13 payoff the loan (if I wish to). He stated that they offer a 5.46% rate for a five yr loan which is $456.77 per month. I told him why do I have to finance with you if I can get a better deal with my bank or another lender? His answer? I would have to speak with our GM about that.
The f**k you side of me just wants to cause a big stink and escalate accordingly and find a solution to pay cash for my M50 but I have waited 10 months for my car, and I have zero interest in any other EV so I do not want to lose this car.
At the end of the day paying 12 months of interest on 20K is not going to break me, but I am so pissed off.
