A new head unit when the one I have works fine won't happen.

Do you believe that based on this info the unit is a drop in or are you saying they are the same unit?

The link shows the same description, but obviously different part numbers.

A new head unit when the one I have works fine won't happen.

• mgu21a =mgu21 with more power (memory and cpu)
• same hardware, but only ui update to mach 8.5 therefore no other function available i5 and i7 (mgu22)

i suspect same hardware beczuse other country of huh4 has also another part number.

What do new i4 being delivered now get? Do they get Idrive 8.5 with new features? Would my 2022 i4 get the stuff they have in i5? For example why does our Driving Assist Plus maxes out at 40mph and the i5 can do 60mph?

Current i4 deliveries would be pre-7/2023 build which, based on the press releases and forum interpretations, will not get the 8.5 capable hardware.

No, I don't see why we could assume i5 features would be on the i4, including the 60mph Driving Assist Plus max speed or some of the other things featured in the i5 release video like gaming, etc. at least not with rev. 1 of the i4 [that we can observe as outsiders]. Maybe the new class cars in 2025...it's anyone's guess.

I'm betting the i5 gets the better ADAS processor that the iX and i7 already have.

Not sure how different the infotainment processor is.

My car was built less than a week ago. It may have 8.5 already installed.
It’s going to be interesting to see if BMW is updating stuff on the fly or just applying the new software to 2024 models.

Latest iDrive 8 version runs in an 11/22-production MGU21 - OEM HU-HIGH (4). This is the MGU in your car.

There is a new MGU21(?) coming into production from 07/23 - the same SOP of iDrive 8.5 for the 2024 i4.

The iX got an updated MGU22 on SOP 03/23, and BMW already announced that the iX is getting iDrive 8.5 OTA from 03/23.

Looks like iDrive 8.5 requires a hardware change for the 2023 i4.

Please search the forums before starting a new discussion. There have already been three discussions started about iDrive 8.5 (going back to January). There are now merged here - BMW Announce iDrive 8.5 and iDrive 9
