The fan icon does preconditioning for cabin temperature and battery temperature for normal driving.
2 different things that unfortunately have the same terminology.
This terminology is indeed quite confusing. I usually try to refer to them by two different words ("climatization" and "pre-conditioning"), as I feel like they refer to two different things entirely.

So, based on the discussion so far, it seems like the meanings are as follows:

Climatization ("fan" icon) - warms up/cools the cabin and the battery.

Pre-conditioning ("battery icon with fan") - same as manual preconditioning in iDrive, or putting in a DC fast charger location in the NAV. Prepares the battery for fast charging.

Just done over 1,000 miles in my new I4 and put some ultra fast charge in for the first time today at a public charger. (Just to see what to do!)
On the 40 miles afterwards the consumption went barmy at 4.5 miles/Kwh. Do the I4's run in for 1,000 miles or do ultra fast chargers improve consumption (can't imagine how by the way)

No. The range on the GoM (Guess-o-meter) adjusts for driving style and recent driving activity. Perhaps you drove downhill, smoothly, or at an ideal speed before you saw this range estimate.
Keep watching it and report back.

Coming from owning a 330e, then about two years ago changing our SUV from ICE to full electric (Q4), then changing the 330e to an i4. Here’s what I learned about EV range anxiety, it’s not real. In the end, you do exactly what we did with ICE cars - drive till the tank is indicating low and stop to ‘recharge’. The whole watching the consumption thing is a tiring academic exercise in trying to convince yourself to not mash the go fast pedal. It quickly becomes irrelevant unless you are on a 250 mile journey in an EV wasteland. Other than that, ignore the instant consumption/range BS and drive the best EV ever built.

I got down to 13% earlier today and then figured I really should go get some electrons before the flap/door cannot open or the computer suddenly has a blue screen fatal charging error lol. The last time I got down to 13%, 2 EA charging stations didn't work and had to go to the 3rd one (became 9%).

Quite, why buy an m50 only to drive it like granny does.

Some grannies are absolute demons when behind the wheel. Not everyone flagrantly violates speed laws like she does.

I'm a grandpa just approaching 70 whose previous car before the i4 was a m235i. As far as I'm concerned younger drivers just get in my way.
