Supercharger access delayed until "later in 2025" | Page 3 | BMW i4 Forum

Exactly -- no car manufacturer (besides Tesla) manufacturers its own EVSE. And many of them contract with Lectron or A2Z to just put their logo on what is also sold as aftermarket EVSE.
Who makes the BMW EVSEs?

If things don’t get delayed again, we should get access in May. BMW is also going to have new DC and AC adapters available. No word yet on the price, but they’ll be available to order on the BMW online shop.

Will the BMW online shop have OEM decals to apply to the DC and AC adapters I already have?

I have no idea. But definitely not a BMW-owned production facility.
I could look at the OEM EVSE in our i4 cargo area and see if it has any clues.
Although another thread linked to this:
A clue regarding who they have worked with in the past:
For their earlier electric/phev vehicles they used ClipperCreek and Websto(turbocord duo) for their included/accessory chargers.

UL 2252 became a standard on 19March2025.
Now OEMs can require UL certified adapters to be used with cars. BMW partner (Probably Lectron based on Honda/Acura, Ford and GM using Lectron mfg) can quickly certify J3400/CCS1 adapter - cerification of Lectron adapter already in progess, according to Lectron CEO - and offer it to us by end of April, I hope, along with TSCN access.

if the render of the adapters is correct, the BMW adapters will be completely different.

After viewing the video on the Ford adapter made by Lectron, I’m thinking of getting the Ford adapter when BMW gets Supercharger access. It looks like Ford beefed up the Lectron design and made it better. I’ll wait to see what BMW has to offer, but right now Ford looks to be the best adapter available.

Without reading this entire thread has BMW made any statements regarding what adapter they may endorse? I ask because if we were to use one that they do not approve then one might have a claims issue should the worst possible thing happen while attempting to charge.

FWIW, as an owner of a Lightning I am very recently in possession of one of the updated Ford branded Lectron adapters. It is very similar in quality appearance to the A2Z Typhoon Pro adapter that I purchased while waiting ten months for Ford to “rush” me my free adapter. Note that this A2Z adapter has been replaced for free by them* after some real world testing yielded minor safety concerns.

* and they never asked for the original one back so now I actually have three NACS to CCS adapters, one of which should probably be destroyed.

Don’t think any OEM has a legal case due to Magnussen-Moss, especially if adapter is endorsed by another OEM.

Thanks. I would think it a low probability anyway but just something to keep in mind if one has the ability to wait for Supercharger access.
I bought. Ford Lectron adapter and got it in 4 days. I bet it will get UL 2552 certification very soon.

The more I look at these images, the more unlikely the J3400/CCS1 adapter seems to me. It looks very un-ergonomic and I could see people easily dropping it. Even the AC adapter looks uncomfortable to use with its thumb button placement.

Oh you’re right about that. It takes a few attempts to learn how to latch it to the plug.

First connect the adapter to the NACS plug, then to your car and disconnect in reverse order.

Both for connecting and disconnecting the adapter to the NACS plug, depress the latch on the adapter. It can still be awkward even after you’ve used it several times.

I, for one, am hoping that the buttplug-shaped renders are bogus and the real deal adapter isn't so ridiculous or oversized. The Lectron adapter is already heavy AF even though it looks to be half the size.
